I keep being invited to update Java by something purporteing to be "Secure.15.PN.installer.com. It comes in standard form with the "run" and "save" boxes.I use the Decline and Cancel options but it keeps returning.Avast sometimes blocks it as a "threat detected" For my piece of mind I did go to the Java website and updated to java7 update 65 published by Oracle.Avast scans and mbam scans seem not to detect anything Should I be worried ?

I've been getting a Java update message too, actually your post Pete has just reminded me about it, i'll take a look! Ok...updated. Java 8 update 11. Auto installed from the Java website, just unticked the 'Ask' bollox and my old Java was removed prior to the new one being installed. My little Scottie dog woofed away in the taskbar to warn me about the old Java removal. Good dog, I'll give him a nice pat on the head!

I have Java set to check for updates automatically, but to notify me before downloading, Go to Java in your control panel, and click on the 'update' tab.

Java now is very seldom needed.I binned the lot in ages ago as did many others(Spitfire springs to mind). There always seems to be security risks with it. Hardly any websites require Java now,do yourself a favour Pierre and remove it.You can always re install later if any of the websites you use require it

I take your point,Phil. My biggest problem is not the real Java,it is the rogue one trying to tempt me to download. It has a habit of interupting me at times when I am doing something important !Romoving the "REAL" Java won't help

I have not used it since security vulnerabilities were discovered with Java last year.

I din't know Java wasn't really needed now, you learn something every day You do need Java for some programs so it depends on what you have installed. Some programs are written in Java. Latest version is 7.67.

Like others have already said, I ditched Java some time ago after Spit's helpful comments and info. Since removing it from both desktop and laptop I haven't (yet) come up against anything that needs it. Also, Peter, if you don't have it on your system and suddenly get prompted to update it, you know there's something fishy and to avoid it.

Yes I also got rid and haven't been flagged since for its need.

well I think I will dispose of it, and presumably if I come across something that definitely needs it I will be prompted to install it
