Which other two are you referring to. The 10GB figure is the maximum the motherboard can handle or recognise. Initially you had 4GB in one slot and it worked. Why do you say this is not removable, never heard of that before. Inserting the 8 GB in slot 2 takes you over the 10GB limit so the M/B stops working. Adding a 4GB in slot two would take you to 8GB which is within the 10GB limit. (6GB sims are not available, only 1,2,4,8,16,32 etc are manufactured). You could also try to just remove the initial 4GB simm and insert just the new 8GB sim and see if that works. Can't see any reason why it won't work as a single sim as the 4GB one already does work. Alternatively return the 8GB to Crucial and ask for it to be replaced by a 4GB.
There is one other fly in the ointment in that it is best to use identical simms in both slots as sometimes there is an incompatibility between different simms used on the same motherboard which is why I suggest the best option in your current situation is to just try and use the 8GB sim in slot 1 and discard the original 4GB sim.

I have at least one lappy that has non-removeable base ram, and my Lenovo desktop has non-removeable base ram too. Has Crucial supplied the correct ram? Sometimes server spec. EC ram is sold cheaper and mixing that with non EC is a bad choice. I may be well out of date there though. EUFI I suppose? Back in the day, W98 was smart enough to be able to use up to its woeful maximum by just recognising all it wanted to and ignoring the rest even if you went over. Few folks could afford all that ram back then anyway.
Do you still have a BIOS controlling the PC? If so perhaps a wander through there might throw up a solution. Unless the base ram is/was 2Gb, then I cannot see how 10Gb is achievable anyway, so from first principles Crucial's scanner is off target. In my experience, since they recommended it as compatible, Crucial will help by swapping and /or refunding. The key is "10Gb". and 12Gb is inviting grief.
As an unrelated aside, I remember an Elite Group MoBo that refused to install XP unless you temporarily removed the 80 conductor lead and substituted a 40 conductor lead. Don't ask how long that took to figure out. It is only offered as an example that this could be caused by something else entirely.

Hi Banjo
I stand corrected. Just never seen it in my experience.
You are right about 10GB being an impossible situation if 4GB is hard wired in and only one additional sim slot

What is fitted in the slot in the photos. It looks like a memory sim. Is it the 8GB sim you bought. If that is the only slot then you can't use the 8GB sim if the other built in 4GB memory is fixed.
Can you please just tell us the make and model number of the motherboard so we can try and find a manual for it.
At the moment we are just floundering in the dark and making guesses.

As ARW said- what is the MoBo? It looks like a lappy to me? If possible, go with the Belarc Advisor Pat and post here please.

Hi Banjo
It looks more like a desktop to me in the photos however now we know that what we are seeing is a single sim slot which is empty and the info that the 4GB is hard wired then I would say that the 8GB sim will not work under any circumstances as with the 4GB hard wired plus 8GB is now over the 10GB limit that we are told is the motherboard limit. Under these circumstances the only option is to return the 8GB for a compatible 4GB sim and fit it into the empty sim slot a total of 8GB. The problem may be finding a sim which is compatible with the one wired in. Unfortunately Belarc does not list the sim product number only what size is fitted in each slot. Maybe someone else knows a suitable program to determine this as the OP says he can not see where it is fitted in order to read its product number. The M/B manual may include this info and list compatible brands and types.

Good thinking Alan. Decades ago I used Sandra but it was bloat and I settled on Belarc for my needs. SiSoft Sandra used to be on magazine freebie CDs. www.sisoftware.co.uk/download-lite/ It could well be worth a go. It's ages since I used MemTest86, but that might work too. It was a part of Winternals but is probably still available standalone. Winternals is an old favourite weapon of choice, but since it served well to secure Redmond employment for the writers, I'm not sure of its efficacy nowadays. Time was when M$ employees were unofficially using Winternals at work! I'm kind of giving the game away that I don't go inside PCs much these days and am probably out of touch? Then there's CPU-Z (or even CPUid within Windows?) Steve. e&oe ...

At least if you bought it from them, and it's gone wrong, they should be able to help and offer a refund if all else fails.
