Hi all.Can someone please help out with this problem,Every time I connect my external HDD to make a backup,This ex HDD in in a caddy powered by mains and connected to the desktop via usb cable. Now the problem is as soon as I start the backup to the ex hdd the internet gets knocked off no access with internet at all not even on a laptop down stairs,As soon as I disconnect the ex hdd within a few mins the internet is back on. Can anyone assist with this Please. It's a bit of a pain the only way I get around this is to do the backup during the night when we don't need the internet. Many thanks.

How is your PC connected to the internet? I suspect you use ethernet. If so, try using a wifi connection and unplug the ethernet cable when you do the back up/.

Hi,Thanks for your reply.Yes it is connected by ethernet I cant connect to wifi has its a desktop and dont have wifi connection on it. You say to unplug the ethernet can you give me an explanation why.Would it do any harm to the desktop other way if I left the ethernet connected?? Thank You.

I assume that your laptop downstairs has wi-fi. If so, then why not disconnect the network cable from the desktop, do the backups of the desktop that you require and use your laptop to access the internet? Just a guess, but possibly something needing the internet is connecting to your desktop, and it's doubtful that a backup program will run while something else is running. Thus the backup program is closing down the connection. Just my take on what it might be!

What sort of internet connection is set up, if the laptop loses connection is it going through the main PC. Don't you have a router.

Many thanks for all replies,Regarding the laptop downstairs that is running on home plugs with ethernet.
Any idea what the desktop would be looking for the internet?. All other laptops ipads etc all all working well it's just the desktop is causing the problem when I go and connect the ext hdd.
Many Thanks to all.

Can I just get some thing clear in my mind, in your original post you said "as soon as I start the backup to the ex hdd the internet gets knocked off no access with internet at all"
So, is the internet connection lost when you connect the external drive, or when you begin to run the backup to that drive?

Dicky, I just wondered what program you are using to create your backup ?
I do exactly the same as you, plug in a portable HDD, which is used exclusively for the backup, and my internet connection is fine throughout the time the system is being backed up. Another thought, is there anything else on the external HDD which could be causing some sort of conflict with your internet settings ?

Hmmmm, just a thought, but have you tried connecting the external drive to your lappy, and then seeing if the internet connection to the lappy also drops out?

Nob, I thought that we'd already established that it isn't the backup softwear that's causing the problem. It's the external drive! Am I missing summat?

Dave is the sync thing auto starting as soon as he plugs it in, he could try removing the sync prog and see if that cuts the net out. Plugging a HDD shouldn't have anything to do with the Ethernet unless there is an IRQ conflict. Maybe try device manager to see if there is a IRQ conflict with the USB connections. If its windows 7 open device manager, view resources by connection Interrupt request IRQ see if there is a problem there. Maybe uninstall the HDD drivers then reinstall, windows may sort it.
