Dave is the sync thing auto starting as soon as he plugs it in, he could try removing the sync prog and see if that cuts the net out. Plugging a HDD shouldn't have anything to do with the Ethernet unless there is an IRQ conflict. Maybe try device manager to see if there is a IRQ conflict with the USB connections. If its windows 7 open device manager, view resources by connection Interrupt request IRQ see if there is a problem there. Maybe uninstall the HDD drivers then reinstall, windows may sort it. He could try removing the sync program, but unless it uses the internet I fail to see why it should cut it out! That IRQ conflict is deffo a possibility, I read somewhere that a powered usb drive is sometimes the cause!

I'm not sure whether Dickymint ever got his problem sorted out, but he certainly did me a good turn ! I had never heard of Microsoft SyncToy until I started reading this thread but as it sounded like something I could use, I investigated further. I downloaded and installed SyncToy 2.1 64bit, and now use it weekly (or more often if I create a lot of new images) to synchronise my backups (or should that be backs up ?)of all my current image files onto 2 separate external drives. I know Dickymint's original problem related to using an external HDD, but SyncToy runs like clockwork for me. If you see this dicky - thanks
