I am experiencing problems with connecting to the internet with pages dropping out or not loading and sometimes the wireless connection also dropping out. My Netgear router DG834G is getting a bit long in the tooth and I am thinking of replacing it to see if it will resolve my connectivity issues.
CA have recently given a good review for a trendnet TEW-812DRU which has 802.11ac capability. My current router has built in modem, whereas the trendnet product requires a separate modem. Is there any benefit from having a separate modem compared to one built in?
If I go with trendnet router I will need to buy a modem, any recommendations? Also any for router/modem combined?
Thank you

Who supplies your broadband? Try them for a freebie. Is it definitely the router causing the trouble? A couple of years back I had awful trouble getting online and was cursing the router, after many calls and complaints orange sent me a new one. Same problem. Wasn't the computer cos my Xbox and phone wouldn't connect either. After orange failed to offer a sokuti moved the lot to bt, all sorted.
I'm not one for a conspiracy, but it turns out that orange only pay to have a line into the exchange from their side, which relies on bt correctly connecting my side into the Orange box rather than leaving it lying on the floor.
A mate of mine was with sky. He lives around the corner from me and had the exact same problem at the same time. His solution was also to move to bt.
I think (with no evidence whatsoever) that bt sabotage their competitors exchanges in order to get more customers...

Like said contact your service provider, they can check your line and probably send you a free router. As for the modem bit why do you need a modem. Just make sure everything plugged into you phone line has a filter fitted. They tell you to plug the router into the master phone socket try that and you can tell them you have. Your paying for the service use it get onto them.

I have had my D-Link router from Aol for circa 5 years now,and I realize they don't last for ever.Fingers crossed it is still doing a good job .As for getting a router now from an ISP--they have really cut back and send you the cheapest one they can find--according to my friends. I was thinking of getting a Trendnet as endorsed by C/A,as a failsafe, but I dont understand the issue about it not having a modem.Surely I dont need a modem nowadays ?

gom, have you used InSSIDer, free from inssider.en.softonic.com/ to see if your wi-fi connection is dropping out because of interference of your signal by neighbours` signals? A very useful little programme. Perhaps you just need to change channel?

Thank you for your replies.
My comment regarding modem is that in the article the writer makes reference to connecting the trendnet router to a modem and also when researching internet prices one comment was 'I didn't realise a modem would be required as well'.
I have tried changing channel but this did not make any difference.
As suggested I will contact my ISP and see what their response is.

Apologies for delay in responding.
I have been in touch with my ISP and they can't find any problem with the line. I am still experiencing problems with web pages not loading or not loading correctly. If line is OK then must be problem either with router or software on my laptop.
Will have the opportunity of connecting to the internet this week using another router so should be able to either confirm if it's a router problem or not.

Have you tried using a different browser regarding webpages not displaying properly?
Also try starting your browser with all add-ons disabled to see if there is a difference,if so try enabling one by one to find the culprit(s)

I have tried different browsers Chrome, Firefox, Opera and the problems occur with all of them, some worse than others. I am unable to access microsoft live email with chrome, opens web page after logging in but can't open e-mails or compose etc, but can access and send e-mail etc with Firefox and Opera. I don't have any add-ons just the basic download in each case.

If you are using windows OS, I had similar problems last week, I could not log into live mail/hotmail at all. It all started after an update from microsoft, through a process of trial and error I found out that somehow some of the internet protocols had been changed. Go to tools/internet options/advanced/scroll down and make sure that use ssl 2 use ssl 3 and use tls 1 are ticked. this cured my problem and can now access all sites. I can only assume that something in the update altered some of the settings.

Have you got filters in all your phone sockets? Even the sky box if you have one needs to go through a filter.

Disconnect that and shoul see a vast improvement.
