Odear. Having bought a galaxy tab in Dec last year, I had to make my bran understand android, now along comes an ipad and I have to think differently. Already I've forgotten a password and because of that, I can't install google (via the app store) so I've put the pad down for a while. I bet I'm not the only one who gets confused easily. The word safari is new to me, when I click on that, am I right in thinking it's a search engine? and when I want to save a particular website, are the referred to as favourites or bookmarks or something else, and how are they created? Got a feeling it might be a long day and I want to be on the beach. ??

That looks about right. Undecided whether to convert my thinking to apple, or try to customise to look/feel like android. I wonder if it can be done?. What I do know is that we're going to take advantage of the warm sunny day and I will shut myself off this evening and work on this instead of telly.

Try your local library for an iPad book as they will have one or be able to get you one for Free, unless they have to get it from another counties library if so there will be a slight charge.

Thanks to both of you. Before I respond to your posts, let me say I have a ipad 4th generation (late 2012) system ios 7.1.2 model A1458 and it's the larger model. I sort of guessed that the word safari, was the apple equivalent of chrome/ie/firefox etc. Because during set-up there were a series of questions re ID and password and the latter required capitals and numbers, I became slightly confused and forgot where the capitals were and needed to go through the process of a new P/W whilst using an unfamiliar tablet. That's when I decided to leave it for a think. It was obvious it was best to respond to apple's emails via my laptop, that made setting up a new P/W easier and it is written down now. As for your links uncleub, what I've done, is to copy them and place them in a folder on laptop and during the day, will have a good read. (must ask about your odd name uncleub which I can neither pronounce or spell). As for both your idea's about books and library, whilst I appreciate your input, my daughter bought me the Samsung Galaxy book at Christmas and I honestly don't think I've opened it and now the galaxy is destined for Cash Converters, ???I'd much sooner ask here or read via google thanks. Now I have established my ID & P/W, I'm off to install a few free apps, just so I can do it. Report back later.

The forum name Uncle UB came about because of the film starring John Candy....Uncle Buck.It is one of my favourite films and watched it many times over the years. In it Uncle Buck gets called UB by his nephew and niece,so I kind off used Uncle and UB together to get UncleUB...Sounds a bit crazy I know but thats me..mad as a box of frogs..

It's clear now, damned if I could see uncle.
As for progress with the ipad, I've made quite a bit. Once the ID & P/W were sorted, I've looked through the apple apps and grabbed a dozen free ones that I'm familiar with. One thing I have yet to sort out, is the back button. If I have a read no doubt it'll be there. Somehow the tablet has synced with my laptop and I have all my bookmarks from laptop so that's good.
Unsure if I should refer to it as ipad or tablet. Don't want anyone to think I'm bragging by saying the former, but it helps when people give full information.

Cuba, my wife has an iPad and, yes, Safari is the default browser. However, you might like to have a look at both Dolphin and Atomic Lite, both free from the Apps store. Personally, having given them both a try I think Atomic Lite is the best of the three but each to their own.

Personally, having given them both a try I think Atomic Lite is the best of the three but each to their own. I am assuming without looking, they are both alternative browsers. I've installed chrome, not for any other reason than I'm used to it on my laptop and having gmail, it's synced everything to ipad. Thanks, will look tomorrow, just debating whether to go for an evening stroll along the prom.

OK, so a brief look at Atomic Lite nearly put me off as it said the word "advanced". Anything that suggests difficult I I back off, however it did interest me when it said swipe to go back etc, as currently I have yet to discover how to go "back". Dolphin, nothing there rocked my boat. So rather than get too involved with yet more things to learn, I think I will stay as I am, but thanks.
One thing I need to discover, is how to save stuff for off-line reading. Because I have yet to read anything about the ipad, simply because I'm getting a feel for it and following through responses from you guys, there hasn't been time to read, but read I must.

Learning about ipad, I'm using the laptop as it's easier, then going back/forth on ipad to test.
So far, by reading the manual I note that to save something to read off-line, via safari, along the top, I tap a rectangular shape (book) with arrow and a pop up should appear saying “add to reading list”, but it doesn’t. Why not. (Sorted, see later)
I said via safari because if I happen to be looking at a link imported from laptop which is found in bookmarks, the page is slightly different, and the rectangular book isn't there.
I see that via safari>settings, it's possible to stop pop-up's. Does anyone use that facility, or do you use a pop-up blocker.
Unrelated to the manual, but must ask, on my laptop, I used to use avast free, but now the paid for version. What would be required on ipad?
I installed hangouts, as our daughter doesn’t have an ipad and we're used to it anyway. It may be that I try facetime as my son uses it.
Photo's. I use a camera, and download to laptop and from there picasa. Everything about picasa I like. When he visits, I'll get him to run through camera use.
Contacts & Clock are ok
Don't do games or tunes (yet, even though have ipods) actually, I think I can stop here. The ipad is NOT going to replace my laptop, so I don't suppose it's necessary to know everything. Just the basics at this stage.
Now I will look at the links I was sent yesterday. This is proving to be VERY useful. One thing I have achieved, is the save for off line reading. It was a double click that was required to resolve something I was doing.

Hi ethelza, again a name I'm unfamiliar with, plus one I can't fathom out. Anway, thanks for your links. The latter two seem to contradict, in that one says ipad systems tend not to need protection, whilst the other offers protection, admittedly it is biased to iphones. As for google drive. This is something I will delve deeper into later today possibly. We might be out after dinner if the weather stays dry, it is grey and blustery at the moment, but "my" rain alarm, shows there is a narrow belt of rain enroute. Will let you know what I decide. Thanks anyway.

Did all you knowledgeable ipad users know, that there is a website that shows DAILY FREE APPS that are normally paid for versions, much like the kindle free books that are released daily. The site is called appsgonefree and it's in the app store. I am told they are released anytime after 5pm here in uk.
