At present I get a fibre connection 24mb down 10mb up on the South Yorkshire Digital Region Network, but as its lost millions it closes on the 14th August. My exchange isn't enabled by BT for fibre so its back to around 2mb ADSL for me as thats the best I can get due to my distance from the exchange.. There is no Virgin in my area and BT have no plans at present to upgrade my exchange, which has around 26000 residential and business addresses coming from it and also less than 3 miles from the city centre.I am now in the process of short listing a few isps as I have requested a MAC code from my existing supplier

Phil register your interest Openreach will enable the exchange if it gets enough people sign up, that's what I did and they have done my exchange last month and im now on fibre. The government gave our council some cash to get faster speeds to rural areas. www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/

True but Cameron wants us to have faster broadband. I don't know about cities but they have thrown cash at rural areas. Our tory council and tory MP have done a great job getting faster broadband around here. Maybe fire emails off to your MP and councillors, cant hurt can it?

I think they are working on it, BT said speeds of 1.4 terabits per second were achieved during their joint test - enough to send 44 uncompressed HD films a second. www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-25840502

Its a case of those that have get even more and those that don't have still don't have. Then suddenly we are a superfast broadband country(but in reality only a tiny proportion actually are).

I still cannot work out why they started down this end of the country, although I am greatful that I am on 80meg,this is faster than most of the south but there are still places down here that have sh*t speeds.

Sorry to hear about you losing such a good service Phil. Like anything, when you get used to a certain standard, that's what you expect. Up here in the north east I get pretty respectable speeds with BT and am happy with the service they provide. Currently my download speed is 14.80Mbps, and upload 0.96Mbps. Our local exchange has recently been upgraded and BT Infinity is available to me. The package on offer is showing a download speed of 'up to' 38Mbps, but of course I've no idea what I would actually get. At the moment my download speed is more than adequate for my needs and I've no problem with the likes of YouTube, BBC iPlayer, BT Sports etc. So I'm sticking with what I've got for the time being. I hope you get something decent sorted Phil as I think all of us would find it a problem to suddenly have such a dramatic drop in speed forced upon us. Good Luck.

Thanks Alan Tbh I have thought about getting a 4G enabled tablet and do away with the main broadband altogether. There are plenty of decent data sim plans available, just wonder if I could just manage with a tablet alone. I use the internet all the time on holiday without mains broadband and my phone is only a 5.5" screen so why not?

Dunnow how a mobile and home network would work Phil, windows 8.1 mobile is okay on my phone but its not like networking my lappy to PC and any WiFi printer. But if you don't want a home network go for it.
