My Father: From Practitioner to Patient - Living With Prostate Cancer New drugs are now coming through and one of them has made an immense difference to my father's quality of life over the last year. Abiraterone, first developed by the Institute of Cancer Research and now manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Jannsen Cilag, has been approved by the NHS for prostate cancer patients who have had prior hormone therapy and chemotherapy. However, three thousand men in England received it last year before chemotherapy through the Cancer Drugs Fund, an alternative route when a drug has yet to be approved by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence or NICE. Big A does work - as it should - each of the 4 daily tablets costs £25....mo41 www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/mishal-husain/prostate-cancer-treatment_b_5798052.html?utm_hp_ref=uk

Men who are bald by 45 are 'more likely to get an aggressive form of prostate cancer' Men who are bald at age 45 are more likely to develop aggressive prostate cancer compared with those who keep their hair. U.S. researchers found those who lose hair at the front of their heads and have moderate hair-thinning on the crown were 40 per cent more likely to develop a fast-growing tumour in their prostate. This was compared with men with no baldness. www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2757705/Men-bald-45-likely-aggressive-form-prostate-cancer.html

Can the cane toad produce a cancer cure? New research finds the hated pest's venom attacks prostate cancer cells but spares healthy ones Researchers say they have discovered that the venomous cane toad - one of Australia's most-hated pests - could be used to fight prostate cancer. University of Queensland student Dr Jing Jing said his research has found similarities between Australia's toad to the Asiatic toad, which has been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. The research indicates the toad's poison could attack cancer cells while sparing healthy cells. Ok it in the Daily Wail - but heres hoping it may do the biz..mo41 www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2760438/Cane-toad-venom-used-fight-prostate-cancer-researchers-attacks-cancer-cells-spares-healthy-cells.html?ITO=14

Call to offer HPV vaccine to boys = more than a bit late for most viewers..... Scientific experts are meeting on Monday to discuss whether boys as well as girls should be offered the HPV jab. It comes amid pressure to extend vaccination to all adolescent boys in the UK, in line with other countries. The committee is expected to focus initially on whether to offer the vaccine to men who have sex with men, who may be at higher risk. But a coalition of health experts and campaigners say vaccinating all boys aged 12 to 13 would save lives. Continue reading the main story “ Start Quote Since introducing the HPV vaccination for girls in 2008, we have seen incredible uptake and sharp declines in HPV infection rates but we must ensure that boys... can also reap these benefits” Shirley Cramer Royal Society for Public Health HPV (human papillomavirus) infections cause 5% of all cancers worldwide, and rates are rising. The virus causes most cases of cervical cancer, and some cancers in other parts of the body, including the throat, anus and penis. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-29260295The UK's HPV vaccination programme reaches over 80% of girls, but coverage rates are lower in some communities. Peter Baker, Campaign Director of HPVAction.org, said it was blatantly unfair that women were protected from cancers and other diseases caused by HPV infection while men were not.

Breast cancer drug can also work for prostate patients A drug that targets genetic mutations responsible for breast and ovarian cancers could also help to treat prostate cancer, according to experts. Olaparib was developed to target cancer-causing mutations, such as that which prompted actress Angelina Jolie to have a double mastectomy. It has now shown “spectacular” results in the treatment of some prostate patients, according to the doctor leading the trial. Johann de Bono told delegates at the National Cancer Research Institute cancer conference in Liverpool that olaparib appeared to be effective against prostate tumours that harboured certain genetic defects. “In a significant proportion of end-stage prostate cancers in patients who have had every single treatment available, we are seeing spectacular responses with this tablet taken twice a day, with minimal side-effects,” he said. looks also good for man boobs ? mo41 www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/health/news/article4257923.ece

Prostate cancer breakthrough as scientists STARVE tumours of their blood supply - stopping them growing and spreading Scientists have developed a promising treatment for prostate cancer by starving tumours of their blood supply. British researchers say the new approach could be tested in patients within two years, potentially giving them the ability to stop cancers growing and spreading. The scientists made the breakthrough after discovered a molecule which plays a key role in aggressive prostate cancer. Crucially, the academics from Bristol and Nottingham universities have already worked out how to neutralise the dangerous molecule. www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2828668/Prostate-cancer-breakthrough-scientists-discover-STARVE-tumours-blood-supply.html

HIV drug 'can slow cancer spread' A drug used to treat HIV infection can slow the deadly spread of prostate cancer, research has shown. Scientists hope the compound, or others like it, may help men live longer with the disease that claims around 10,000 lives in the UK each year. Early studies have demonstrated the antiretroviral drug maraviroc can dramatically curb the lethal spread of prostate cancer in mice with the disease. Prostate cancer most commonly travels to the bones, leading to severe pain, disability and eventual death. But treatment with maraviroc reduced the spread, or metastasis, of prostate tumours to the bones, brain and other organs by 60% in mice. uk.news.yahoo.com/hiv-drug-slow-cancer-spread-051520044.html#Tlholqlany port in a storm...mo41

If anyone has PC and is being asked to stop their hormone injections,be wary. I had mine stopped after the 3 years recommended by NICE, and now 2 years later the prostate cancer has returned and secondary in the bone as well. Now it's just a holding operation to prevent further spread. The consultant admitted that if I'd not stopped the hormones,I wouldn't have the bone cancer, but that MOST people are OK after 3 years. Not that I'm bitter or anything!!!
