Ok so here's what's happened apparently! My mates pc has a snide version of windows on it and when he logs on he gets the 'windows validation' message.Usually he clicks the 'later' tab and away he goes. At this point I should add that my pal only uses his puter for the internet and to keep a few photos (fishing and shooting) in his album! Earlier today he went to 'log on' and a box came up with a download 'ActiveX' message. My pal tried to both clear this and install it but it just keeps turning off his 'puter. I got him to boot it in 'safe mode' and try a system restore but that didn't work. Each time his 'puter turns off it tries to auto reboot and this cycle continues.I know how to disable the 'auto reboot' function but don't know what's causing the 'puter to keep turning off..I suspect it's something to do with this 'ActiveX' message! I've talked my mate into returning the 4lb lump hammer to the garage but I'm not sure how much longer his notoriously short fuse will burn for! Advice needed!!!!

Does he know what the active x message was he tried to install?
Safe mode>Control panel>Add or Remove programs>is the active x listed in there,
If yes remove it,
System restore is he using Norton security try turning it off then do a system sestore,

The trouble with " Last known good " is the way it gets reset each time you log on - so in this case it may well be a case of Last known bad If the guy has the Windows disk - even though it's a snide one he should still be able to enter the Recovery Console and delete the cause of his woes. Rather than suffer with a bad Windows set up he could always get himself one of those wonderful Linux disks and enjoy all the benefits therein

I'll let you all know how he goes on with it!

Gotta tell you all this....My pal with the short fuse.I've sorted him a replacement lappy which will solve his I/T problems....but! When I tried to ring him yesterday, the call got 'cut off'. I thought that it was because my son was calling me at the same time but it seems not!!!!!! Apparently my pals mobile was going 'belly up' as well as his puter so you can imagine what his mood was! The last time that his mobile packed in..it met with the 'lump hammer' treatment, unfortunately he'd neglected to remove his 'sim' card so all of his numbers were lost!!!! This mobile has also met with the 'lump hammer' treatment but this time he remembered to remove the 'sim' card! . . . . . . . . . . Psssss!!!! Unfortunately on this phone he'd saved all of his numbers in the phones memory and hadn't transferred them to the 'sim'!!!!!!! I don't really deserve pals like this do I!!!!!!!!!!!!
