Or plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose ...
I read an online comment about someone who'd used Lenovo System Update and then found an update to W11 from W10 was possible.
All went swimmingly. An update to the embedded sound card. A couple of other things and a BIOS update. All highly efficient. It never ceases to amaze me how a BIOS update can be effected from within Windows- a bit like jumping off the floor and changing your shoes before landing again.
Yep, you guessed have'nt you? "No operating system found".
I tried all the blue screen options except recovery. Went to bed and left it grinding away at something. This morning it was still SNAFU. I got into the BIOS and tried a few EUFI to Legacy options and others too eventually falling back on "Set Up Defaults" , I forget how Lenovo's chosen BIOS supplier describes the safe boot malarkey. Still no go. Round and round and round. We've all been there, but my old rusty XP (and prior OS) blade is of little use in the brave new world of OS domination over the BIOS.
So, fall back on DuckDuckGo. Every jumped up twisted English language website wants to flog you some magic wand. (Bollox to that.) Then I found one that said, restart in Safe Mode and it'll reconfigure some drivers or something. I had avoided starting in Safe Mode because one wallet gouging web wonder told me I'd need a key of some sorts. I've never known that be a requirement before but hey- it's W10 and all bets are off eh? Well I went round the merry go round once more and Shazamm! Safe Mode start up.
Seeing a familiar bunch of icons, albeit with a black wallpaper was a relief as I'm sure you can imagine, but still there was a reticence to restart what was now running! If it can start up in Safe Mode then a repair should be possible right? So, I launched a command prompt window with admin privileges and tried to run "fixmbr" which resulted in "command not recognised" but I'm used to that level of mediocrity, so I though "Sh1t or bust" and restarted.
And here I am- back in the saddle. A relieved and warm happy fuzzy bunny but what a b4lls-up? For once I can't point the finger at Redmond because I reckon all that was of Lenovo's making I'm going to see whether W11 is on offer now, but A: I doubt it and B: I think I'll play it safe after that sh1tf35t because I want to finish watching a binge series tonight.
Happy daze Folks. Don't do what I did.
