I've been here before. Déjà-vu. I've been here before. Déjà-vu. I've been here before. Déjà-vu. I've lost the will to carry on.
Run Sophos Virus Removal Tool.
"Virus Removal Tool is out of date, please download the latest ..." etc etc.
Downloaded some 180 Mb. Done.
Run executable.
"Can't install because the previous version has to be removed."
Apps and Features, Sophos VRT, remove. Confirm.
Nope. "Another installation is taking place."
Log off. Log on. Apps and Features. Sophos VRT. Remove. Confirm.
Nope. "Another yada yada is yada yada-ering."
And round and round we go. And you know what? It's s0dd1nG W10 so far as I can see. Sure Panda AV managed the staggering achievement of flagging itself as a virus back in 2015, but I figure Sophos is better than that. Redmond (whom all the wannabee MCSPs would love to work for yet carry on worshipping at the shrine of garbage) stumbles along at the reins of the bohemoth. Twenty five years on and I'm still eating this junk. It's up to me to get rid of it, but I'm lazy and take the easy option.
I'm guessing maybe terminate the install process, reboot, apps and features, remove, reboot, install? Unfortunately I have an appointment with the wooden hill up to Bedfordshire.

Nope. It falls over at the first step- uninstall from the Programs and Features "applet" or whatever daft name they've re-christened it with from Add/Remove Programs. (Programmes)
I have had to do this many times with Sophos VRT, but this is the first time this has happened. I've had the problem before with other programmes, but not to date with VRT. That's why I point the finger at Redmond, it's not isolated to Sophos.
There's one thing that has crossed my mind- a dialogue box asking to uninstall or cancel may have been hidden behind another window, and if I backed out at the fall over stage, Windows may be stuck in a loop insisting that another installation be completed before anything else is allowed?
I'll look again tonight once we've binged a few more Line of Duty episodes!

Can you still pick a date for System Restore or is it goodnight Vienna implying a sizeable chunk of time backing up first?
I'm going to fire it up now for an evening's viewing. There's no Archers on a Friday since lockdown so we can start earlier. (Give thanks for small mercies!)

Well that's one thing I have to applaud W10 for- I've never had to look at system restore so far. OTOH, although my version of HyperOS supports it, W10 never stands still, and with each major update the HOS code needed to be updated. The company's website is no longer reachable and I think they must have given up playing catchup. A shame because there was nothing else even remotely like HyperOS. It follows that since the migration to W10 from W7, I've not relied upon HyperOS. Anyway, after the evening's dose of Line of Duty, I shut down the installer service and rebooted. Windows' installer did not restart automatically which surprised me, so I enabled it in Services and rebooted. Then I was able to remove Sophos VRT successfully and reboot. Install VRT and reboot. Scan. (clear) What a palaver!
There has to be a simpler way to do this, as I said it's happened before with other programs but only when the machine was still on W7. Prior to this VRT wasn't actually installed so far as I recall- it was a standalone executable- it didn't need to be "installed" (as in regsrv) because it doesn't run in the background. I don't know when, if or why that may have changed, but many thanks for the backup nob.
