I've only just got around to posting this, so sorry for the delay.
I couldn't get the Gmail Mod to work at all with my Opera browser, try as I may. I have been able to get other Chrome extensions to work with Opera in the past, but apparently not all will play ball.
However, when I did try the Gmail Mod when using the Chrome browser - TA DA !!. It worked perfectly, I was able to open MP4 files from emails sent to Gmail.
The issue only arose when using Opera. Obviously, I can't say when it comes to the likes of Firefox, Edge, etc. There is a Firefox browser on this computer, but that's for someone else, I don't use it. I'd have to try from within Edge and see what happens there.
(it would be instructive if other users with their browsers, say Safari, Brave etc, were to post their experiences)
So, your options would be:
1) Carry on as before and download the MP4s file in order to view them..
2) Install Chrome, and use Gmail from within that instead.
3) Or migrate from Opera to Chrome.
Apart from that, I can't think of anything else. Hope this helps though.
Bye for now.

Update: Just tried using Edge to go into Gmail to view MP4s, and the same issue encountered with that browser as Opera.

I recall that Google has a thing about allowing "less secure apps" (that is how Google describes them.) Unless or until you make that switch, Google arbitrarily blocks less secure apps on Android. They may be spreading their claws into Windows too? Perhaps logging into your Google account and ticking the appropriate box regarding less secure apps might be worth a punt?
I haven't used Google's gMail client software for years. I don't use it on i386 preferring to log onto gMail using Opera on the rare occasion I see the need, and I have the gMail android app disabled along with Chrome and a lot of other Google bloat. There has been a passing interchange regarding BlueMail on here, and I've noted that I use BlueMail and also K9 Mail on Android, and I don't generally have any problems playing MP4 files, but then again I have "allowed less secure apps". Just occasionally an MP4 crops up that needs the file to be downloaded first, but I put that down to my chosen limit on the size of each eMail previewed.
e&oe ...
