And I have only just managed to update the last of 11 machines to 2004.

I still have two truculent lappies. What's the point of releasing updates that force manufacturers into re-writing drivers and ultimately users to consign hardware to the dumpster? No wait a minute, I get it- progress and of course profit. Apart from hard core gamers and 3D modeling, do we really need such bleeding edge technology to go on FacePage, Twatter, Amazon and eBay?

Frankly "NO"
Just as an aside I did originally have 4 machines that would not update to 2004 through the Windows Update facility. They all said that my machines were no ready so I waited and waited. In the end I lost patience and did a clean online install on 3 of them and they all installed and worked fine. A PIA but I had the time so what the hell. I left the last one alone and it finally updated itself a couple of weeks ago.
