Its landline phone calls that plague me at the minute, TalkTalk have a system that you can activate that allows you to hear the caller and approve, but people I want to talk to don't wait so I don't use the system any more. I even get car accident enquiries on the mobile lately.

It's a big problem. We only use our mobiles for emergencies,so the landline is the main problem. You can't set it to discard "withheld" numbers, as all the calls from the hospitals come under this category,so we use the answerphone as a call screener, and all our regular callers are used to it now. Still keep getting texts in Chinese? quite often on the mobile, but just ignore them now.

The land line gives us grief too. It wouldn't be so bad if we actually got any other use from the LL, but we're all mobile here now and BT charge goodness knows how much for a few yards of copper wire. It seems to be constant Asians wanting to "fix my internet". BT could fix this but what do they care? I have tried stringing these scrotes along, but they eventually hang up without a word just where we get to the point that they want me to enable remote, so now I do what everyone else does which is to hang up on them. A brief moment of revenge. Bottom feeders.

I've had calls from landlines before now showing on the screen (from scammers), but they're actually able to use genuine people's numbers somehow. Some landline numbers that show up are (to me) obviously fake, because the dialling code doesn't even exist anyway. Here's a list for anyone interested: www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-telecoms-and-internet/advice-for-consumers/advice/telephone-area-codes-tool

Also, be very wary about calls that ring once or twice and then ring off - missed calls. You may be tempted to dial 1471 and call the number back. If you do press 3 (or whatever option it is), you're charged by the provider rather than if you just dialled the number direct. But if you do decide to call the number, even if it appears to be an innocuous landline number (01/02/03), you may find yourself connected to an expensive rate call (probably charging £'s per minute). Some information here: www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofcom/latest/features-and-news/missed-call-scamsEven though the article refers to mobiles, it can just as easily be landlines. If in doubt.......
