Had a notification tonight via Windows Update that 1903 is now available for our PC, to download and install.
It probably won't let me update Windows Defender until I do that, so with some trepidation I'll create a restore point, and keep my fingers crossed.

It probably won't let me update Windows Defender until I do that, so with some trepidation I'll create a restore point, and keep my fingers crossed. Hi Matt, Bear in mind that when you update to a new version of Windows 10, ALL your existing Restore Points are automatically removed during the update procedure. If version 1903 fails to successfully install, and your system reverts to version 1809, your previous existing Restore Points will NOT be reinstated … and you will have to create a new one. I usually have to re-activate System Restore after installing a new version, and then create a new first restore point. Instead, I suggest that you first create a fresh full Image backup (all partitions) on an external drive prior to updating to version 1903 … everyone should do this. Note that a bug exists in 1903 when you leave other USB devices (or cards) connected to your PC whilst updating to 1903. Microsoft has advised users to first remove all USB devices prior to updating. Perhaps this bug has now been fixed after the recent 1903 patch. Good Luck, Spit

Update: I can still update Windows Defender as usual, so that's not a problem. However, last night it gave me an 0x800700e error, and then the screen went black, couldn't do anything so had to switch it off at the wall. Tried sfc this morning, no problems. Found this website though: www.wintips.org/fix-windows-10-update-1804-fails-to-install/Booted into safe mode and deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder to clear the download (recommended by above website). Now trying the Windows 10 Update Assistant.

I had to do that on the laptop that wouldn't update, that is using windows 7. Thanks for the heads up with 10, I have a couple of windows created backups and I'm currently backing up the drive using AOMEI Backupper Standard to an external drive just in case.

I've already had to image backup with Macrium Free, although it took nearly five hours via USB 2.0 to backup all partitions.
Currently still waiting to see what happens with Windows Upgrade Assistant.

Just used the Media Creation Tool this morning. No problems with it yet.

Nice one I hadn't heard of the AOMEI program. I'll have to have a look at that.
