Well Folks as some of you know I don't share the enthusiasm of others for Redmond software, but that's not going to stop me from admitting defeat with Windows 7 Update. My Windows 10 lappy is recalcitrant over the big quarterly updates too, but it's my Lenovo M92P Win7 Pro box that has me floored. It's 64 bit and it is fully updated, but it's the hoops I have to jump through that annoy me. I have to keep the update service disabled to prevent it from auto starting. This is because if I don't perform these gymnastics, any installation (including updates) or removal fails because something undisclosed has not finished installing. As usual, no hints from the great white god- just a Dear John dialogue box. I get the usual notification of updates at which point I change the update service to enabled and start it. The installation goes ahead and then I have to stop the service and set it to disabled in that order. If one of you gurus can shed any light on this mess then I may not need to do it any longer. It's not a home install and I keep it clean and mean. For me it's a fag. My W10 problem means I can't see the point of jumping from a W7 frying pan into a W10 fire, and in any event- that W10 lappy only has a the free W10 upgrade from.W7 Pro, Adobe Reader and "Sophos on Demand", so I'm still pointing the finger at MS. Any suggestions regarding my W7 Pro box updates issue gratefully received.

Steve, Are there 7 updates available, my lappy on 7 ultimate cant find any. I couldn't update to 10 when it was free because it didn't like something on the lappy and would stop the install and roll back to 7.

It's mainly Microsoft Security Essentials Nob with occasional other updates. Silverlight used to be a problem but I used some M$ tool to "fix" that eventually. As I said, this issue affects uninstalls too, I cannot uninstall anything unless I take manual control of the Windows Update service because it just complains that another installation is not complete. Obviously I have been trawling Google already.
Interestingly (although unrelated), after a simple registry hack, I have even managed to update a couple of my XP machines recently. They took about six hours each to complete!

By coincidence it was only this week that I decided to dig out my Win7 lappy that I haven't been using for ages. I've been using my desktop and my tablet for my everyday needs. Anyway, I've been busy updating the security progs on this lappy, stuff like Avast, Mbam, SAS and Ccleaner etc. and it's running beautifully, cooking on gas as they say. So, reading this thread I decided to open the control centre and look at the windows update tab. Clicked on it and the hamster wheel just kept rolling and rolling, nowt happened. So, I went and looked in the updates centre, August 2016 was the last time that Windows updated both the o/s and security. So, as nothing seems to be broken then I ain't gonna try and fix it. If Windows ever starts to piss me off, well it's not the only dog in the fight, is it?

That worked for me, at the end of the updates it wanted to install windows 10 but said it failed, I installed Never 10 utility and that's sorted that out so all's good.

Thanks nob. I'll look at it tonight. I am still thinking that installation and removal actually works fine, I just have to maintain the update service in a disabled state. This means that the PC is still querying Windows Update at Redmond OK without the update service running?
Referring back to my Silverlight problem; the Microsoft "solution" (in part) involved deleting a temp directory's contents (not the obvious temp directory...) on the grounds that it was OK to do so if nothing had been installed recently. Well since Silverlight wasn't updating, nothing had been installed so I wielded that blunt hatchet. It didn't fix the problem at that time (no surprise there) but now I think about it, the issue I have started around that time. That's how I figured out the Silverlight problem- by holding the update service off during start up. I thought about replacing the installer service by lifting a copy from my W7 Pro lappy, but I cried off because that seemed like asking it to replace itself- like jumping up to change its boots- to effect that I would need to pull the fixed disk and USB it to another host machine, and I'm getting fed up with those workarounds. In addition it might require fiddling with an ISO extractor (been there and done that with slipstreaming...) which would mean pulling the host machine's fixed disk first to do the same. (or just reinstall the whole shooting match?) Been there and done that too many times as well. I'll post an update should I get anywhere with it. No news will be bad news.

That might be worth considering to get over the major W10 updates problem I have experienced. I haven't read it in detail yet but I noticed that when executed, part of the script checks for earlier versions of Windows first, so I'm guessing it's specific to W10. That is to say that it's not a Windows Update fixer per-se, it's a Windows 10 update tool. My problem is undisclosed installations not being completed which blocks any further install or uninstall in Windows 7.
I suppose it could be virus or trojan activity... Thanks anyway because it could assist my W10 problem, and as a dedicated banking machine I suspect the onus is on the customer to make sure his or her PC is fully updated to qualify for any online fraud guarantee protection?
