I know jack about Kahlers other than the heady price tag Dave. My only involvement with vibratos has been with S-line Leo-Types and those I just add springs and tighten claw screws to stabilise the at-rest tuning. I would love a Maestro Vibrola for my Firebird, but I am reluctant to bore the necessary holes and anyway- one of the stop tail mounting bushes is impossible to conceal. Considering what they are in the cold light of day, they are even more stupidly expensive than a Kahler and far from stable to boot, but they have "the look". Bigsbys are Marmite. I view them as scaffolding. Each to his own etc. Unless you are Jeff Beck writing under a pen name, I would give a vibrato the swerve and install a Tele ashtray. "Joe Barden" ones are made from a slightly heavier gauge, have two extra tiny stabilising screw holes, are nickel plated (which I vastly prefer to chromium) and benefit from the oh-so ergonomic flange scoop that makes it more comfortable to play. I have one on my home assembled Danny Gatton signature Tele. It is noticeably easier on the little finger than the standard Fender one on my (again!) home assembled Esquire. I agree with BJ.

Now then, I agree with your assessment,Steve, and have used a Japanese ashtray like tailpiece to cover the routing hole. The bridge is separate on these. There must be some trems kicking around somewhere, but I can't find one! The one here looks like a Jaguar type?? m.youtube.com/watch?v=2piQeHmEfIEAs for marmite,,I'm not a lover, but in the 60s,I could only afford a Hofner, and they all seemed to come with a Bigsby. PS, Jeff Beck?? please....Hank maybe. On another subject,my copy of the auction catalogue arrived today, well worth the money. Haven't had time to read it through fully yet,but there's lots of background.

0001 goes for 75,000 dollars !
Only kidding, that was the copy. The real one made 1.5 million dollars. Phew! Everything is going for well over the estimate.

The world's most expensive "marriage". Hmmm. I have some 3/16" and 1/8" letter punches here. How much for a 0001 neck bolt plate?

"A Black Stratocaster, with a later neck." That'll be a partsocaster then!! Not bad for 3.3mil.plus commission even if it is only dollars. Hey,Mr Irsay, I've got a few old guitars,it you want to expand your collection! See that the Bill Lewis custom wasn't in the sale???

50 years, since Brian Jones was found at the bottom of his swimming pool! Blimey, how time flies. Now largely forgotten, the man who founded the Stones, and brought slide guitar to the UK. Before him, there was only lead, and rhythm in each group, but he wanted two equal guitars playing off each other...unheard of then. Asked his mate and namesake Paul to be the singer, but when turned down, the " other" guitarist in the group had a mate who could sing a bit,and the rest is history. Although the blues is the basis of rock music, they're the only band to get a12 bar blues to no 1 in the charts, although to be fair, they could have sung the alphabet and got to no 1 at that time!

Didn't know about that! Trying to get in on the high price run?? Will have a look, and come back later! Edit.. No mention of charitable donations!! One of them is a Trigger lookalike, for goodness sake. I'll be selling my vast collection of 6 1/2 guitars next, and expecting at least 10 k for a partsocaster that bears a passing resemblance to 001,............. if you're in a dark room, wearing mittens!!!

Well Paul Bigsby claimed copyright infringement but it didn't get anywhere, partially because he apeared to have appropriated a much earlier (eastern European?) design.
My Firebird which does have such a headstock and therefore has the machine heads on "upside down". It DOES make a difference to the relative sounds of the strings, so there's something in this devil's advocacy. It throws you at first, not because they're upside down per-se but because it's implicit that they're at opposite ends of the headstock, but you soon aclimatise. The Firebird is an animal of a guitar and in some respects unique. Apart from Chester Burnett, not many players can wear one with confidence. Phil Manzaneera maybe.
How's the clear out going Dave?

About time too!! Now when will the same be done for other "bits" on instruments, which were made long before restrictions on the use of endangered species was even thought of ?...........I won't hold my breath.

Nile Rodgers was on the BBC the other night playing what I thought was the "hitmaker", but then I noticed that it had a good coloured pickguard? Could it be that he is the mystery buyer of 001, or is he just teasing us??

A real shame, he was a very good drummer.
