Hi Nob
My Linx Tablet because it couldn't download W10 1803 has gone back to the previous update W10 1709 and works OK
My HP i7 came with W10 already on and it updated OK.
My HP i3 came with W10 already on, but the download stopped everything from working.
All 3 of the above already had W10 installed when I bought them, so the had drive should have been able to handle the
latest download.

The last W10 "update" has hosed the Samsung multi-function's ability to scan. Just when I needed it too. Scottish Widows keeps erecting brick walls against allowing me my money. This is the third time they've found "one last form" to sign. I'm pleased for those that have so much success with multiple Windows boxes, but for me it's just more and more of the same old same old.
We're talking Samsung here- a blue chip company. Jolly old Samsung have compounded the problem by passing all support to HP and guess what? the HP support (at least for the W10 Samsung patch) is down worldwide. I have until the 29th to complete or the recipient pension provider will withdraw their offer.
Micro$oft carp.
Is all.
MEH.

It's looking like a firmware update for the Samsung 3in1 laser is required to play ball with the Redmond update. It's also looking like that firmware update also hoses the ability to use aftermarket toner cartridges. Stuff happens. Stuff M$. Stuff Samsung. It's cheaper to take a sledge to the printer than to pay their seriously inflated consumables levy.

I use that lappy solely for internet banking. Nothing else. No orher installed software. Nada. Just Sophos. It needs to be fully updated to avoid giving any wiggle room to them if there should be any compromising. No down grading. Within that scenario nob, I'll have to eat it.
I'd just bought two cartridges off Amazon a couple of months back ready for when the supplied one died (don't do much printing). If I keep the outdated firmware at least it will still print, but that's not in line with the "fully updated" mantra. Those cartridges (or at least this first one) worked like a dream but are now looking like trash or I could investigate whether any new jolly roger chips are available. That seems a possibility, but at my expense. Oh well, there's a lot of folk worse off than moi.

Ive never had any problems with compatible cartridges Steve. I get them from choice stationery at a good price too.

It appears there may be some issue between Samsung and Microsoft? That stretches my imagination and just sounds like an internet même, but Microsoft does have a track record. I have decided to remove the Samsung software and forget it. I can put the software onto a Windows 7 Pro lappy I have which is a better computer anyway. Before I do that, I shall check out the firewall settings and UAC. I suppose I should have done that originally, but with a pressing deadline I went into panic mode. Wouldn't be the first time.

I only paid about £19 for two after market toner cartridges. The one I tried worked just fine. The Samsung ones are £40 upwards. On the one hand I don't blame Samsung because the market decides what they can charge for a printer so they make it up with consumables, but I could probably buy another printer for an extra outlay of £20 over the cost of the cartridge. This is not "saving the planet" is it? I will post the outcome even if it's just a workaround. Cheers nob.

Well I thought I'd do the honours and try to re-install the out of the box driver tonight. First I made an online bank transfer to my sister- just before Edge ceased responding. Three fingered salute and I was back in the saddle.
So I decided to familiarise myself with the situation regarding automatic updates and the potential for any customer say in the matter. I poked around the updates schedule settings and when I backed out, abracadabra! a white background screen with gobbledegook that wasn't even wingdings let alone meaningless text. Frozen mouse. No console. Bugger all. I hit the big switch and moved on. Life's too short. As stated previously, there's nothing on that computer beyond the Sophos "on demand" scanner, the Samsung printer suite and as I now recall- Acrobat.
Yawn.
