I have a few .AVI files that won't play. Not in VLC or Real or another Blue Chip player I have but forget what it's called because it's on the PC. None of these players flag the files up as corrupt- they just display a black program window space and stop playing after a couple of seconds. (The title bar returns to "VLC Player after a brief file name display).
VLC Player's "repair" function doesn't. I downloaded a similarly forgotten name AVI repair tool, but when I try to use its "Strip Index" function, it tells me that they are not AVI files even though that is their extension. I've tried renaming the extensions to .MKV, .MP4 .FLV and so on with no luck. The files are still taking up plenty of fixed disk space.
I know "AVI" is a catch-all wrapper for any number of different packaged contents, but I have a great many other AVI movies that play just fine so I'm not immediately latching onto missing CODECs. This has me stumped and I'm asking here whether anyone else has come across this or has a potential "fix" before I just give up and reclaim the disk space...

I think I've seen that web page months ago when I first noticed the issue and attempted to address it. On the other hand, there are one or two items there that I don't recall such as the impact of installing additional media players. I shall try the suggestions tonight. First up will be removing the other players (I put a couple of Blu Ray players on so they'll be first to go) and then removal and re-installation of VLC. Thanks Peter for the memory jogger.

I've already tried two converters nob. They just crash. I feel the better approach is to strip the index and rebuild it, the trouble with that is those fixes report that they are not .avi files. I know they are because I've watched them before. Moreover, they are named with a .avi extension. It only affects around half a dozen files but as you'd guess they are ones I wanted to keep to watch again. Many I've already replaced but these remain (and remain they do taking up the usual amount of disk space.) I have tried the idea of removing conflicting players and re-installing VLC Player. My last shot is to put the drive into the W10 lappy and if that falls over then it's offski.
Hope you had a good break. 10 days is good because 7 days is too short and with a fortnight, the second week always goes by in a blink. You had to have better weather than we did!

I don't have Media Player John. I thought M$ had ceased bundling it and also that they donated it to open source which I believe is exactly what VLC is- an open source fork of the Media Player code. Back in the day using XP, I had very little luck with Media Player anyway. Missing codecs I reckon. Also- iTunes (or anything remotely Jobs-ish) is not given houseroom at Hippy towers!

Steve the weather was better than here but they had a bad February and its still not warmed totally yet. But at least they know warm weather is on the way unlike us who don't know what's coming tomorrow let alone Summer. I hope you crack the files Ive had them corrupted and couldn't do a thing with them even a restore didn't help, try it you never know.

I already installed VirtualDJ (free) and it's a keeper even though it was no help on this occasion. I have noted Bob's selection for future reference, but unfortunately I'd already "manned up" and deleted the offending films. Thanks to all.
