What is the purpose of a barcode scanner for mobile phones? If I were to install one on my iPhone, presumably I would use the camera facility to use it, but why?

Not sure exactly as to the point of being able to scan barcodes.
There's a lot of those QR codes about though. Often, if you scan them, they'll link you to some webpage on your phone.

I've seen shoppers scanning items on the shelves and wondered if by doing so, you somehow got to know if the item was cheaper elsewhere.

Oh, right.
I've seen people doing that in Tesco (I thought it was with one of their machines though). As far as I know, it just tells you the price of an item in-store.
Not personally aware yet of any barcode scanners for Apple, Android or other types of phone.
