Here is the situation. The missus has gone to care for a sick relative. There is no wifi in the relatives house. I bought a PAYG dongle to use in her laptop, to try and overcome the problem, but the reception is awful and she has to practically hang out the upstairs window just to get a connection. Can anyone suggest any other option.Help please Squatters, as she is moaning like hell and doing my nut in!

The "dongles" are only 3G or 4G John, so probably no better or worse than a mobile operator provision. Maybe another mobile 'phone network service provider would turn out to be a better option in that catchment area. Another solution would be to use BT wifi that is available from most lamp posts these days, but I guess you'd have to be a BT internet subscriber to benefit from that.

Thanks very much for all the replies. Unfortunatley the relative does not have wifi , broadband or router(87 year old and gas cookers are considered new fangled). The missus isnt a BT subscriber so cant use the BT hotspot system. Jal's idea of 'tethering' is a good possibility and not one I had considered. How easy would it be to do? I know nothing of tethering

I know nothing of tethering If the mobile broadband speed using a PAYG dongle is crap, surely the mobile broadband speed tethering to a smartphone will be equally as crap. Or, as someone who's never used either a dongle or tethering, am I misunderstanding things?

Just get the internet signal on your phone network turn your Laptop on and let it pick up the signal for that network and you're up and running. As long as the phone and laptop are close to each other while you are using the laptop you'll keep the signal on your laptop.

Not too well. Wife's mum passed away, so the need for broadband was forgotten about. Thanks for asking. .
