I have (and have used) the Sophos virus removal tool on my desktop JJ. It has never detected anything on my PC. Who can say whether my computer is free of infestation or if the Sophos tool is useless? The proof of any AV / security pudding can only be the smile on your boat when (and if) it traps something undesirable.
I use the free Sophos AV app. on my Android devices and they all remain (apparently) free of infections. At work, they've just chucked out Kaspersky mainly due to the performance hit on the machines, especially at start up. So far, Sophos seems infinitely better than Kaspersky in that respect.
My employers have given all employees a single free license for Sophos to use on a home machine. Perhaps I'll give it a go because the price is right for what is a top drawer AV product. Sophos were always traditionally regarded as supplying blue chip companies (or basically those that could afford to pay!) Any new threat in the wild usually attracts comment from a Sophos spokesperson on the BBC.
In my opinion, the best is Eset Nod32 which runs in machine code and is barely detectable in everyday use, but this again is too expensive outside of the torrent sitez.
I'd give the Spohos tool you queried a go. Just remember that it does not offer real time protection by which stage it's too late with these encryption nasties to which you linked.

Hi Steve I just saw it being mentioned on the WebUser sight and just wondered if it was any good. Myself I have CryptoPrevent on my Desktop PC and as far as I know it runs OK.
