Ade,
Going for the Big one here! Got an Acer 5610 (my trusted old machine), and I have decide I'm gonna put linux on it.... Question is do I dual boot or go for a new (swap the) harddrive?
Current specs are 2gb ddr2 ram, dual core 1.6hz, built in wireless / webcam / cardreader / dvd burner - so it should be more than enough for ubuntu 8.04lts
I use the machine as my personal machine, for everything from edit photos, watching / listening / burning media and working from home. Oh and a bit of surfing....
What do you reckon is my best option? Dont want to tamper with any of the other machines in the house... she'd kill me!

Dualbooting is a damn sight easier than most people would believe but before you commit yourself it would be a good idea to try a few ( or a lot ) of live CDs . Check out PCLinuxOS and PCLinuxOS Gnome as well as Ubuntu. Mint in both the KDE and Gnome versions and OZ/OS would all be worth looking at ! Enjoy

Would I need to download 'virtualbox'.... again Noooooooooooooooooooooooo! Just boot off the disk to have a look round but in all honesty you need look no further than one of the two main PCLinuxOS distro's They are both full featured, rock solid and quite easy to get started with!!!

Question is do I dual boot or go for a new (swap the) harddrive? Dual boot is by far the best option, that way you also have the use of either OS, "His & Hers" possibly. Plus, you can play and investigate one system without losing the use of the PC if things go pear shaped.

Hi Smud, I also use an Acer (Aspire) for my main machine, fully customised though. All 3 of my machines are dual booted, simplicity at it's best, and best of all, the wife doesn't mind as one of them still runs (the worst OS ever) XP, but she has not got to grips with Vista yet, and Linux is a no go with her either.. My opinion would be to go with the Dualing
