Many did not agree with him because of his staunch points of view, but he represented people's points of view forcibly, something that is lacking in today's environment where a fair number of politicians and trades union leaders fail miserably, being so wrapped up in the acquisition, retention and exercising of power. RIPIP, few make such a ripple.
If he had been Scottish, Salmond wouldn't have stood a chance...
