Yep, I've just spent a nightmare couple of hours with a W8 lappy. OMG....this o/s really is a pile of crap innit.
So this lappy belongs to Spanner's nephew, I usually refuse to mess with stuff that don't directly belong to a pal, but this is for Spanner and he gets privileged treatment.
He told me that the on-board keyboard don't work, but a portable one does. It appears that the A/V ran out months ago and there are no system restore points.
Anyway..I managed to activate the built in back to factory settings option, but the keyboard still don't work, although device manager sez it's working ok.
There are a few keys missing off the keyboard and the whole machine has been misused by the looks of it.
Stumped! ..........going pub!

David, not something I would enjoy either if there were a few commands that failed me I'd probably have tried the, speech setting to get it to do a few things, which means I would have sounded mental from a distance

Could it be drivers, have you tried to update? Yes Bob...went straight into device manager and tried that ... 'Already have the latest drivers' it said. I think that maybe summat has been spilt over it and it's a h/ware issue!

Try to take the keyboard off. On mine the screws are marked with a picture of a keyboard so you should be able to remove it on it's own.

Sod that.....I'm not messing with the hardware on any puter belonging to a kid I don't know. He can take it to a shop like anyone else. Relatives of pals, ain't the same as pals!

Dustbin job. Sounds like the keyboards knackered stuck and not working keys.

I used to do Windows repairs for friends and friends of friends, but Windows just drives me nuts now, having switched away from it as my main OS. It seems to break for no apparent reason. Heck, let the computer repair shop boys have the headaches! Keeping wifey's Win 7 lappy running is enough work for me. Hoping the mere mention of an alternative OS to Windows won't drive the rest of the members here into a frenzy of hate as it did on the CA forums!

Dunno if you remember Nob, but a long time ago I fixed a keyboard on one of those lappies that I used to get for 'recycling'. I replaced some of the key presses and those tiny plastic things beneath them, and reconnected that tape thingy that joins the keypad to the masterboard. It worked perfectly after that. The difference is though, I flogged that to a fella on Leicester market for a nice few sovs, and that makes ALL of the difference innit!

Can't remember that Dave too much Scottish water under the bridge, but if you don't have the missing keys then there ain't much you can do but source new ones and that's too much hastle. WD40 great stuff,
