In the current issue of Web User, there are instructions how to try the 64-bit version of chrome. I followed it through via bit.ly/chromebeta351
as far as I was able to tell, it installed. Via add/remove, I looked to see if it showed up there, it didn't. My next move was to go to Start button>control panel>system & maintenance>system
Under system type, it still said 32-bit
So, have I done something wrong, or is it that my laptop can't be changed?

Isn't it the processor which determines what the computer bit rate is? I thought that it was.

You are confused. You can run 32 bit programs on a computer with a 64 bit processor (which is all of them these days) - but you cant run 64 bit software on a 32 bit OS.

sounds right
lots of software sites offer a choice between 64 and 32 bit programs. any user who doesnt know what type of machine they have should go for 32bit (x86) version, as it will still run.

If that's me, then I'm not at all confused, having a 64bit lappy myself, I'm fully aware that 32bit softwear will, and does, run on it. However, due to I thought that it was the original poster that had confused his 64/32bit programs and systems up! If it wasn't me .... then I apologise.

any user who doesnt know what type of machine they have should go for 32bit (x86) version, as it will still run. If your machine is Win7 then go to... Start up>Rt. click Computer>properties...you will see which Bit ( 32 or 64 )you have installed.

If there are two programs folders programs x86 and programs then you have the two, x86 being 32 bit and programs the 64 bit.

Good lad, then the next question is, in view of the fact that I went though the procedure of installing the beta version 64-bit and it didn't throw anything back at me to say it wasn't possible, will anything be left on my laptop that should be removed? there isn't anything in add/remove

I haven't installed one (knowingly) and usually close my ears when I see/read anything about Registry Cleaners. Without wishing to be rude or offend, I don't want to go down a route I know zilch about, but thanks. Anyway, I'm off to my daily dose of BB now, tara.
