Funny you should raise a point like this, I have just found out the CA forums are closed down, without much explanation. I learned a lot from forums such as these, especially when I first started, and I encouraged my fellow silver surfers to do the same. I agree it is easier to google problems these days, but it was handy to read about other people's problems in order to gain knowledge without ever posting yourself.Any idea what has happened, is it just money? They are suggesting you send a problem to the mag, but that is a slow business, and covers only a minute amount of info in comparison

like any new aquisition its not long before something gets slimmed down. WU has to be fave and the dep editor has stated that the forum was safe and said the other day, he'd like to 'reassure both existing and new members of the Web User forum that we have no intention of closing down'. but time will tell
its was running two forums, (maybe more) one crippled (ca). imo the mags are too similar and rivals in the same firm. plus, lots of stuff that was ill about CA, lots said earlier in this thread and rings true. one for certain was the members posts vetting rule.

i think its because even the dumbest twat out there has realised they just type the issue in to google and the answer is there for them,,,, they just need some one to implement it for them.

Well, only recently I said this to one of my pals " Just type it into google and the answer will be there" His answer was "I did that, the answer was there, but I didn't understand the terminology"
Some people just ain't technically minded, and I wouldn't want to be calling this pal a 'dumb twat' either, it could prove a painful experience!

The interesting thing is, Daniel, the editor of CA, was the editor of WU. He went to CA promising to keep the forum active then had a change of mind. WU maintain they will continue with forum, but it was dying a quick death with many leaving. The boost has come with CA members joining. Can't help wondering if they will stay to keep it going.

thats so true, the boost is still ongoing. just popped over for a peek and theres more replies added to a ca thread. some well known faces that WU will soon see as nuggets for a site that has been in need of. oddest thing is, last i looked there were more from ca then wu as you say, time will tell

When I used to do IT support the way to get answers to a lot of problems was trawling through the RFC's and/or registering with microsoft to access their help files. Nowadays you Google the error message and fix it yourself.
Obviously you switch it off and back on again first. On that point, if anythas the HTC one and is having problems, most seem to be fixed by restarting it (rather than power off and switching back on).

You see that is just what I was talking about, what on earth is an RFC or an HTC

An RFC was a helpful document written by real experts on the internet. Proper geeks! I think they were employed by the internet standards people, they became diluted over the years, but I think some of the originals are still knocking around.
HTC? Currently making the best mobile phones on the market. They first reached most households by sponsoring a bike team, and having Mark Cavendish win countless tour stages with their brand all over the TV.

On the same subject Dave, I note posters referring to WU in the same breath as CA. What is WU. I presume it is a Mag and it looks like the still have a forum going, so I will look it up. It is also nice to see some familiar names from CA on here

Craig, 8 is extremely slow, and has been created solely to make Microsoft money from advertising as far as I can see. Apart from which I hate it with a passion, unfortunately my new laptop came with it installed. Have tried to put Linux on it (with help from my friend Rats) but totally failed What!.... why the hell didn't you come back here and ask, I could possibly have 'walked you' through it! Windows 8.1.1 on an SSD. Start button to Desktop - five seconds. Programs open faster too.

Possibly so Cal, but I don't think that Anne's laptop has an SSD, and if it had, I'd wager that Linux would boot just as quickly!

Now that really is impressive. Most of the comments I've seen on forums regarding W8 have been pretty negative, but that is a huge step forward. For myself, I used, and got along well with XP for many years. I gave Vista a miss and when the time came for a new machine, I went with W7 (Home Premium)and have been mightily impressed with speed and stability. My W7 desktop has 16GB RAM, and the W7 laptop has 8GB, both run Photoshop CC very well and that is my main priority. If and when another new machine is needed, maybe W9 will be available. If that has the start up speed of your W8.1.1, and SSDs become the norm, the improvements will be well worth it.
