Nob, the default email client in Linux Mint is 'Thunderbird'..... I've never used it, I just use my Yahoo email like I do in Windows, works just the same. I send emails from my Linux machines to my pals, I even order my repeat prescription from the doctors by email. Works perfectly, as does most web mail I expect. I'm fairly sure that Libre Office, which is the default office program in Linux, does it. I don't think that Linux even reads file extensions, it just uses the appropriate program to get the job done. Try it, works on Windows too..... tinyurl.com/lshrej4BTW....FF is the default browser in Linux, although I have Chromium also installed on my netbook. Ten quid machine.

The discs are usually 'live' discs, just shove it in and usually there is an option to either 'install' it...or just run it from the disc. Run it from the disc and you will be able to see what it's about, remove the disc and it's gone, just like any other program. BTW Nob, didn't you once mention that you had an Android phone? Well, Android is just another version of Linux, as are those Chromebooks that are so popular now!

I am, seeing as you intend to use it on a W8 machine, assuming that it's a 64 bit machine. So, First, click on .. blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2493Then scroll down the page until you see ... HTTP Mirrors for the 64-bit DVD ISO: Click on this link .. United Kingdom University of Kent UK Mirror Service and download the iso file, save it to your downloads folder (or wherever you normally save downloads) All you need to do then, is burn the iso to a blank DVD disc (not CD) using the program that you normally use. I use CdBurnerXP, which I think is excellent, it's also free from filehippo. If you have any problems with above, just ask, and we'll do our best to help.

Nob, if you give it a go, try not to make the mistakes I did, when I first tried Linux. 1/...It isn't Windows, it isn't any thing like Windows, it isn't supposed to be. So try, it isn't easy, to lose your Windows mindset and don't think about comparing them, well not until you get familiar with it anyway! 2/....Don't just give up, I did twice, but fortunately being a stubborn old git, I went back and tried again. 3/ .... For chrissake, don't try to run before you can walk, I did, learned my lesson and took tiny steps, it pays off. 4/ .... I'm a million miles from being an expert, but just ask and if I can help, then you know that I will. If I can't, then there are a few good Linux people at Kitz's place, particularly 'Roseway' (Eric) Also Bob who used to post here, I think he's still posts at t'other place. Personally, all I've done is worked out what I actually use my puters for. Basically I use them for browsing t'internet, a couple of forums, keeping personal files, piccies etc. My music, films and videos and streaming sports and tv. I then decided, that actually, I needed windows to do none of these things, they all can be done equally well on my linux machines. I also looked at the programs that I keep on the left hand side of my windows desktop (right hand side is for links)..There are 18 of them. 6 of them are concerned with either security or something similar, and that isn't including WinPatrol which is in my taskbar. I need none of these on Linux. Anyway, each to their own, but if either of my W7 machines crashes, then Linux goes straight on them!
