My pal mentioned to me, that he was thinking about using one of these mobile broadband dongles to connect the Linux lappy that I've sorted for him, to the internet. This got me to wondering, are those dongles compatible with Linux. Anyone got one, and does it say 'on the box' what operating systems they work with?

I think Anne uses one when she's touring, but can't say I've used one.

Yep, I'd read that article Smudger and there is a 'tab' for mobile b/b in the Linux Network Manager. But!...there is also a tab for w/less networks, but unless there is a compatible driver in the Linux distro Kernel, it doesn't do much! I was rather hoping that it was p'n'p, I asked a fella in the Vodafone store and he said, "'nope' doesn't work" ... A fella in the EE store sez "Yep, it does work, depends on the dongle, look on the box before you buy" I was hoping that someone here had a 'box' with the info on!

Hi Ratarse, I have Vodafone mobile BB dongle you're mate can have for nowt. All he'd have to do is top it up with a fiver and give it a try in his lappy. Save him paying £30 for something that may not work.
Drop me a PM with an address to send it too if you think your mate would like it.
Craig.

This is exactly like the one I have Ratae. It's written here by the questioner that it doesn't say Linux on the box. It also don't mention Win 7 BUT it works ok on mine. The fella answering the question reckons its compatible with Linux; he's flogging them.

Thanks fellas, and thanks for your kind offer Craigy. Arch, that is interesting, 'cos 8.04 Ubuntu is a much older version of Linux than the version of Mint that I've put on the lappy. (Mint is based on Ubuntu) But, I've decided that I've done enough with this lappy that my pal got for free, and I'm gonna let him sort the internet out for himself. Jeez, considering that the lappy cost him nowt and my services are free, it won't hurt him to cough up £5 pm to Plusnet or someone similar for proper broadband. From now on, some of my mates have got to help themselves a bit more.

Fair enough Dave, good luck to your mate. Hope he can get it all working.
