So, some of you will no doubt have heard of 'Hotspot Shield', which is probably one of the most popular FREE VPN providers out there. I always used this utility when I had Windows on my netbook, and was using the nettie on public wi-fi. (got Linux on it now) Anyway, the server for the program is in the USA so you were given a yank ip address, only the 'pay for' version gave you the option of a UK address. But the same company 'AnchorFree'.... have brought out a FREE version of this utility, with servers in the UK, appropriately named 'Expat Shield' As any of you that have taken your lappy abroad and tried to use the iPlayer will know, the iPlayer only works with a UK IP addy. If you have Expat Shield installed....fixed. Apart from that, it does everything that Hotspot Shield does. I've put it on my lappy and I'm giving it a test run for a while. It's a bit of a pita to install, so anyone who wants to give it a go, let me know and I'll give you a couple of tips. tinyurl.com/39ggkno

Saved, But reading the reviews they are a mixed bag. That's right Nob, but they are with Hotspot as well. In fact, about everything I've ever installed, seems to have given problems to someone or other, who has then written a negative review. TBH...I think that often it depends on the individuals own system. In some of those reviews, folks complain about it loading every time they boot their system. It does if you don't untick the box at setup! "In order to minimise the impact on your day-to-day Internet use, it is important to disconnect from Expat Shield and prevent it from starting automatically every time you start the computer:
Right-click the shield icon and select 'Disconnect/OFF'. In the browser window that opens, click the red 'Disconnect' button, then close the browser window. Right-click the shield icon (which is now coloured red) and then click on 'Show on restart' to remove the tick mark. (This is a toggle setting – on each click the tick will be applied or removed to change the setting. It is only necessary to do this after installation as the setting is remembered.)
Ok on this lappy so far.

but does it work in Egypt? Yes Smudger, as a matter of fact it does. But!!!! Only if you are using it while sitting beneath a pickled beetroot tree on the banks of the river Nile. Of course, you also need to be feeding McVitie's digestive biscuits to the crocodiles at the same time. Yup, as long as you are doing that, it runs on rails!
