I was about to use CCleaner just now when I got a box asking me if I wanted to download the latest version. As this is a regular intervention I said yes.I was directed to the piriform site which gave me the option of three download sites .I chose filehippo and clicked on the top right corner and proceeded to the DOWNLOAD button. All went well until I was asked to click on the Setup.exe box in the taskbar and it asked me to proceed to "run".When I hit "run" my Avast anti virus went daft with all sorts of alarm bleeps ,saying this was a very unusual download.
I exited and quit the download,Next I ran mbam, and it threw up three PUP files for deletion, the top of which was PUP.iBr. Got rid. Strangely one of CA's latest issues had a very interesting article on how some common and well known download sites have managed to beguile punters into downloading all sorts of "extras"--toolbars eg--we dont want ! I'll stick with my current version of CCleaner

Why didn't you download it from it's makers site Piriform when it was offered. Mainly coz I use filehippo on a regular basis, and I have downloaded CCleaner updates from there before. It has been a trusted site for me for yonks.

I also use Filehippo but if I'm given the choice I always download from the makers site.

If you open Ccleaner then options then about there is a link to download the latest one from Piriform. I have the auto check for updates turned off.

Ok....I have just downloaded and installed the new version, and as is my custom, I did it from FileHippo. I do this because I have the FileHippo 'Update Checker' on my desktop, and always use it for what it's intended! So...it ran on rails. However, as is also my custom I look very carefully at the components that are in the installer. I unticked the desktop shortcut (already have one) and unticked the website checker, 'cos I don't fancy being told what or what's not suitable. Anyway...........it's all good. No warnings from Avast or anywhere else. The site says that FileHippo contains no adware or spyware, I can only presume that those potentially unwanted programs (PUP's) must mean the website checker!

Anyway...with reference to my previous post. Having run the FileHippo update checker, apart from the Ccleaner one, there was a whole bunch of program updates. Among them was > Firefox Java VLC Media Player CDburnerXP WinPatrol Adobe Flash So I set about doing the necessary. One example of what I was saying about checking installers, was the one for VLC media Player. This is among the very best cross platform free players out there, it plays anything and everything, and does it all very well. But, the installer needs watching, 'cos by default it has all of the boxes ticked for making it the chosen application for your media files.....audio, video etc etc etc. Just untick them, and select your own player for what you want. VLC will be in the 'options' menu anyway if you prefer it. Eh........let's be careful out there fellas!
