Hi all, I have a friend with one of them smartphones and was wondering, do they need security softeware like we do on PC's?
Stuff like SAS 7 MBAM? It's an Android phone.
Thanks.
Craig.

I have tried BitDefender and Lookout. BD was fine until I got a beta of Eset Nod32. Excellent until they "updated" it and began to charge. Fortunately, I had rooted the 'phone and I just restored Eset backup from Titanium. Now I have Sophos and it seems to be really good. The acid test is whether it slows your 'phone down every bit as much as detection rates, and Sophos scores 10 on the resources meter. Another one to consider is Belarc Advisor. I have used it for years on the PC. It's not a virus cleaner in the ordinary sense and will exist happily along side your security suite of choice. It's just an alternative approach and that's not a bad thing. Lookout has a few stand alone cleaners that may be worth considering too. All the foregoing applies to Android. I can't bring myself to buy into that other prescriptive system...As usual, YMMV! As to whether you need such protection, specifically on Android which is a 'nix flavour; I don't think so if you are reasonably circumspect about what you do, where you go and what you click (tap) on. The usual reasoning is that whilst you will generally be OK, you may pass nasties on to others and so it becomes a social responsibility to keep your own house clean. This extends to include the potential for finding your own email address on one or more blacklists, or even your IP address being complained about by third parties to your provider.
