do you understand any of this? if so could it be translated into newbie?
After thinking and reading about this, i see two main solutions.
The first one is not the more clean, but it will do few modifications. On your SDCard, make a directory like "programs" (or whatever name you want) andupdate your PATH environnement variable to add this directory. The system will know that this directory will contain programs. When you have installed a program, you can type whereis to know where the program has been installed. So "whereis gimp" will show you where the gimp is installed. Cut & Paste (sudo mv file destination) the program to your "programs" directory on SDCard. Verify (ls) he has the correct right (especially execution "x") for all users (or use chmod to correct this). Then, the program is on the SDCard and you can launch it by his name like when it was on SSD.
The second one is the clean method, but the most hard one. You can create on SD partitions and copy on it stuff in /usr (and maybe /bin and /sbin). Then declare in fstab /usr as your new partition (and maybe /bin and /sbin asyour new partitions too). Mounted automatically, all the softwares by Synaptic, by .deb or by make install will be installed directly on your SDCard. But for advanced users and you have to keep your SDCard in the slot to use your pc (keep a copy).

The 2nd or " clean " way has a lot going for it ...... but the drawback is that the PC will only work with the SD card in the slot. The 1st way is pretty much what I hinted at in our SD card thread ( phew ! ) So I will try to sort that way out on one of my systems as soon as I can and then get back to you . Shouldn't be too bad - not like reinventing the wheel although it could be like reinventing the spoke
