What do you think it was that stopped it Dave?? Don't really know Nob. The only thing that I can think of, is that when I reformatted the drive with Linux Mint, a new w/less driver was installed! Before...even when using the XP partion, the w/less activity wheel just kept spinning and spinning! Damned strange...... I'm in my 'Friday' local, typing this post on my netbook. I never could connect to the wi-fi in this place before .... using either XP or Linux Ubuntu. This time with 'Mint' ... when I typed the SSID password in, it connected instantly!

Anyway....for reasons that I'm not sure, I decided to see if I could use Linux softwear to do what I do on Windows with my "ConvertXtoDVD" program. So, after some googling etc, it seems that (unsurprisingly) there is not an open source program that does this...well not as comprehensively anyway. But there is a way! First up I had to download a program called 'DeVeDe' from the repositories. This is the program that does the conversion from AVI to a DVD iso file. I loaded the vid 'Micky Flanagan's Out.Out tour' .... and used most of the default settings in DeVeDe...... Jazus....it took sodding ages to convert the vid! It saved the iso file in a folder that it had named 'Movie' in my 'Home' directory. Then...I opened 'Brasero' ... which I think is the default burner on many Linux distros and loaded the iso file from the 'Movie' folder. It burned it ok and the vid looks very good, but basically, this shows exactly why Linux will NEVER compete with Windows. The softwear available, which although works ok, just isn't, and probably never will be as simple to use as professionally produced stuff! Most people just want to click a 'mouse' and do the job without any bother, Linux stuff takes some figuring out to get the same results!

I does seem a lot of hassle when windows is available. That it is Nob. I just like the challenge. I do also admit, that I suspect that one day it will become the system that it's capable of becoming. But.... that will not be until softwear developers are allowed to make money from their work! That's my opinion anyway.

I does seem a lot of hassle when windows is available. FFS nob stop keeping him going or eventually he'll admit his ability to screw things up was lacking in his 2, possibly 3, marriages. It appears his only screws were totally computer orientated and he never listened to the feedback.

How dare you, fine talk from someone who has 'Disappeared' his own wife (the saintlike Mrs.S the first) and has recently had the police dig up his patio in the search! Anyway, I'll have you know that I still reigiously have sex three times a day! That's nun in the morning, nun in the afternoon and nun in the evening!

Well...as I hadn't used my Linux netbook for a couple of weeks, when I switched it on today, I ran the 'Update Manager' just to see if there were any updates.
Yep..about thirty of them for various things. One of which was an update for Firefox for Mint.
Anyway...updates downloaded and installed, I logged on to t'internet.
As I've mentioned before, my default browser with Linux Mint is 'Chromium' ... not because it's a 'better' browser than FF...it's just faster at opening web pages than FF is on Linux Mint.
But, this new FF update to vers 22 has made a difference. Very little to choose between them now for speed.

Grrrrrrrr ... I've just wasted an hour trying to do summat that didn't need doing! So, I have a pdf document that I want to save on this Linux machine. No problemo thinks I, until that is I took a look at which pdf viewer was installed on Linux Mint! Couldn't see one. Strange thinks I, there was one on Ubunto, Evince it was called. So yer boy looks in the package manager for Evince, ain't there. Still no problem thinks I, I'll install using the apt-get thingy in the terminal. Does that, but can't see it in the package manager. Hmmmm, does a bit of googling and finds out that in Linux Mint, the default pdf viewer is called Atril.....looks for it in the package manager and it ain't there. But anyway, getting properly pissed off, I saved the pdf file in the 'Documents' folder, double clicked it and it opened with 'Documents Viewer' Well wtf is going on here thinks I! A bit more googling and it becomes plainer. It seems that Evince works ok with Linux Mint, but not if you have the Mate desktop edition (as do I) More googling and I discover that for the Mate desktop edition, Evince has been twiddled with and renamed (yep yer've gorrit)... . Atril And the final insult is, that when I look again at this 'Document Viewer' the 'Help' menu tells me that it really is the 'Atril' one. So.....after all that pissing about, I already had the pdf reader that I needed. Sometimes...Linux does make it very hard for anyone to love it!
