Yep wouldn't mind giving it a go Dave, Like I say if I had an old machine I wouldn't hesitate, just for the learning curve if nothing else. But I would get lynched wiping windows and installing Linux.

A high spec machine isn't necessary for Linux.

Well, if you ever get your hands on one, here's where I downloaded from ...... www.linuxmint.com/download.phpIt's the 'MATE 32-bit 64-bit o An edition featuring the MATE desktop' one... (not the NO CODECS version).... I obviously got the 32 bit version for my Nettie. The iso boot disc 'runs on rails'

Anyway...this morning I biked into town and when I'd been to the market, I decided to test drive the Netbook on the 'Spoons' wi-fi. Naturally...I was forced to have a sausage butty while I was there. Anyway.. The last time I tried my Nettie in there, it wouldn't connect either with the Ubuntu partition or the XP one. It didn't connect to the wi-fi in my local either! But this time, as soon as I fired it up, the wi-fi kicked in and did it's thing. It not only found the 'Spoons' SSID but the pubs next door, the BT Open Zone and half a dozen other ones. 'Last Pass' auto logged me in and I was cooking with gas. Not tried at my local yet, but not expecting any problems.

So....once again down to completely unnecessary tinkering............I once again screwed it up!!!! Yep, completely my own fault. I discovered that 'Cinnamon' flavour desktop in the Linux repositories, clicked on it expecting it to install alongside the 'Mate' one that came on the disc. It didn't...it deleted the 'Mate' one and everything went boobs up! Should have realised really. Anyway....I reinstalled the whole shooting match from scratch and I'm looking good again Hmmmmm....won't be making that mistake again! Oh yes...the story of my life innit, always a day late and a penny short ain't I? A review from a Linux expert....Now he tells me!

What does that mean? You cant have two OS on the hard drive. No Nob...I did have two o/s on the drive before installing Linux Mint, I had Ubuntu and XP. What it means is that you can't install a different desktop environment, over another one! As I mentioned earlier, Linux Mint comes with a choice of four different user interfaces (desktop environments) I had installed the 'Mate' one. Then, thinking that I could install the 'Cinnamon' UI alongside it and choose which one I used, went and installed it! Can't be done, as I found out to my cost. If you install Linux Mint with one of the other desktop environments, the rest of them will probably be found in the program repositories. You can't install any of those either over the one that you installed initially. Sounds complicated...but it ain't. Imagine trying to install the XP UI over the W7 one and you get the idea!

I binned one that I could have used. But I didn't know about Linux at the time. Nob...I knew that there was summat that I meant to tell you, but I've only just remembered what it is! It's that most of these Linux distros, when you burn the file it's a 'live' disc. You are given the option to just run the operating system from the disc without installing it. That includes the disc I've burned from that link that I've given.

Feeling rather pleased with myself actually. Yesterday I was messing about with the Netbook...tried to watch some live streamed footy on it. Had to turn off adblock to be able to watch fullscreen etc, just as I do on my Windows machine. Then I got loads of gambling and 'dating' screens pop up. On the windows machines it doesn't matter 'cos my custom 'Hosts' file does the job of blocking them. Then I discovered that Linux also uses the 'Hosts' file. I read up on how to customise it by using the 'Terminal' Copied and Pasted the names of the sites that I wanted to block, using the command line. Bingo! ..... Fixed.

Well..exactly the same as the 'Spoons' Nettie recognised the SSID and auto logged me in! Strange tho' ....how it wouldn't get me in when I was using XP and Linux Ubuntu on it!

What do you think it was that stopped it Dave?? Don't really know Nob. The only thing that I can think of, is that when I reformatted the drive with Linux Mint, a new w/less driver was installed! Before...even when using the XP partion, the w/less activity wheel just kept spinning and spinning!
