I wonder if some kind soul can advise me. I apologise if these questions seem trivial and silly to you, but I have never done this before and am well stricken in years....a recipe to get things wrong.. I have for a while suffered Virgin National ( the adsl service) as my ISP but their recent service to me has been appaling......despite my line syncing at 8.2Mbs ( the best I can get on my local exchange), they have been giving me an average of 2Mbs and on Xmas/Boxing days I was getting 56Kbs....that is some congestion/traffic shaping. There are no LLU or FTTC operators around here. My platform is XP SP3. I have now signed with Zen, and migration day is Wednesday 2nd. January I will continue to use my own Netgear DG834G v4 router. On that day I will need to reconfigure my router with the data given me by Zen and also await a BT Network engineer to do his thing in the exchange. I will continue to use my own Netgear DG834G v4 router. The question is, when to I do that configuration....I don't know when the engineer will be doing the job. 1) Does the router have to be configured for Zen before the engineer visit...does he need that to make the connection and do his tests ? 2) If I leave that configuration until after the Virgin connection is cut off, I would have no internet for a short period....under that circumstance, can I still access the router through my browser to make the changes ? 3) Do I have to reboot my router/PC at any point ? 4) After the switch I will presumably be running with a new IP address....will that void all the cookies I have, and make them unrecognisable to the relevant sites ? I am sure this is old hat to you experts, but not to this old codger. I do appreciate that Zen have a good support team, and I sgould phone them with these queries....but the years have taken their toll and I am now so profoundlt deaf that the phone is a no-no. I would be most grateful for any advices.

It's been a long time since I did the same thing Ref, but if I recall correctly, I configured my OWN Edimax W/less modem router before I connected to the internet.
Actually I had no choice, because prior to that I was using an ethernet connection.
I just typed 192.168.16.1 into the address bar and used the provided settings.
Of course....you still won't be able to connect to the net until the engineer has done his thing!

Thank you for your reply and comments, Ratae.
OK, come the day, will just type in the detail and then wait for events to take their course.
Thanks again.

Put http://192.168.0.1 into FF or IE that will open the router, By default, the Netgear's username is set to admin and the password would be password. unless you changed it, this gives a basic setup, all you are doing is changing the setup to what zen provide. You can set it up anytime, it doesn't have any effect on what the engineer does, support.zen.co.uk/kb/Knowledgebase/Netgear-DG-834-Series-Routed-IPyou will have a new IP but cookies will not be changed.

Today's the day.....but nothing has happened yet... Can you advise further on the router set-up. Zen have given me static IP and DNS addresses...marked as "for information" Which is the more efficient, to enter them or to leave router set at "Auto detect dynamic addresses from ISP" Sorry to post yet another basic question,,,but am confused. Thank you.

I would use auto detect, it will then use the same IP if its fixed.

Migration went smoothly......whole process was much simpler than I anticipated.
Will monitor performance over a few days.
Thank you all for your guidance.

I've got a Virgin Media Super Hub which took virtually the same amount of time to setup that Geoff's just said.
