Hi All ! This is a hypothetical situation, and I've read about it somewhere, but can't remember where! Is it possible to use a Linux Live CD (e.g. Linux Mint 8) to rescue an unbootable Windows PC? In other words, can you use the Linux CD to boot Windows from CD so that you can launch System Repair, System Restore, your Recovery Partition or just to save some files and transfer them to a USB flash drive etc.? Just wondering...

If it can,it must be about the only thing as erd commander/spotmau/bart and the rest cant-especially if its a problem with dual booting.

I don't think so Ellie. They use completely different file systems so it's most unlikely!

Y'now that old saying "If summat looks too good to be true...then etc etc" Regarding that Ubuntu live disc. If you can follow all of those Linux commands, then you're a better man than I am Gunga Din!

Many of the system repair CDs are Linux based. A basic Linux disk like Mint will load up from the CD and run in memory, Doesn't need the HD
From there you can copy files from a Windows drive but editing configuration files should be possible. Linux reads just about all file systems.
A very simple use is that if a Linux live CD will load it's a good indication that your hardware is ok and problems are with Windows.
They also have memtest on the CD boot which I used recently on an XP machine .

That's very helpful, Bob, thank you very much! (I knew that you'd know about this !) Could you possibly give me a link that relates to this (Fletch's link is great !) but with particular reference to Linux Mint? Any info. much appreciated !

Hi Fletch! Thanks ever so much - I already have a Linux Mint 8 (Helena) Live CD. What I'm after is something like your How-to Geek link, but that tells you how to with Mint.(I like the beard !)

Just follow the steps in the Ubuntu article. Mint is Ubuntu based, so the procedure will be the same.

The download guide PDf in fletch's link is a start but do you mean something else about using the disk with Windows ?
I have Windows on drives alongside Mint and can just browse the Windows drives but the CD is just the same except you can't add extra software.
