Took up fishing recently, long story, grandson wanted to try it, I went overboard and spent to much money, grandson don`t want to know anymore. Hence I got two of everything, so I decided to take it up again,(I used to fish as a lad) Now tackle has come on in leaps and bounds since Tom Sawyer days, and although I have purchased quite a bit, its basic.
Now after a few weeks ,2/3 Days a week, 3/4 hours a day, I finally caught my first fish since starting. There is a twin lake just a few miles down the road from me which is handy, and stocked with Carp, Roach, Rudd and millions of Gudgeon and Minnows.
Is there any advice you could give me, or bait tips and also is there a reasonable site for tackle you know of.
Heres my first fish, small it may be, but I caught it.

Roy Been fishing for as long as I can remember Roy. My grandfather, stepfather and my uncles were all fishermen and shooters! I used to do a lot of match fishing, and back in the 60/70s I was the team captain of my local club! The new wave of anglers all appear to be specialist carp fisherman, this isn't something that appeals to me. From what I can tell the damned fish seem to catch themselves, the fisherman wakes up when his bite alarm sounds and reels Mr Carp in!... Not my thing I'm afraid! I still go fishing tho'....same place as I go shooting. But I just really like to sit and catch (the old way) whatever comes along. So...I'm afraid that I can't offer much advice as regards modern methods/kit. The best advice that I can give...is just enjoy it, and never ever ever sell your kit!

Thanks for the reply Ratae,
When I went to the tackle shop, I said I was starting from scratch and wanted two of everything, £ signs must have been flashing in front of his eyes, I`m not saying I was caught, but I was sort of steared in to Carp fishing, probably thats as you say, most anglers are going that way for the big fish.
When I used to fish as a lad, it was all floating with quills, Roach,Rudd, Tench, Perch were all in the net. It didn`t matter if you caught anything, being at the side of the lake with a float bobbing was tranquillity enough, if the float went under it was a bonus.
I would like to get that feeling back, which is why I wanted to know if there were preferable tackle shops on line, so that I could purchase a match rod, reel and quite a few odds and bobs. Do you shop for these things on line or do you just go to your local shop.
Interested

I just go to my local shop Roy. If you tell the guy running the local tackle shop which type of fishing you'd like to do,they will put you right! I'm using mostly the same type of kit I used 40yrs ago, the materials are different but I still use a 13ft match rod and fixed spool reels. Floats are..wagglers/duckers/zoomers etc! I had to completely set up again about 4yrs ago. My original kit was all stolen. I was amazed at how cheap the kit was compared to the price years ago, I bought an ABU 505 closed face reel off ebay and it cost more that one I bought in 1970! Next year I'll do a little more fishing, this year I've concentrated on shooting, but there's no reason that I can't do both!

Ratae, Because I had squat to do today, I went on line to look for tackle shops. I came across quite a few that was cheaper than my local and they have free delivery in some. Lathems of Potter Hiegham has some great bargains.

Roy This thread is old I notice but I am new so I am starting it up again. Husband and me fish Roy albeit fresh water for trout in the lakes. Tasmania has thousands of these from little ones you have to drive ages and then walk into for ages to fairly accessable to easy to get to. The first picture is from an easy to get to one which is Lake Barrington. This lake is world class rowing venue and many Olympians come here to practise. The fish in net is a rainbow trout husband is hauling into tin boat. The other fish are escapees from the fish farms down at Strahan pronounced Straaaawwwwwn) and this lot are ocean trout which are rainbow trout reared in salt water. they also breed Atlantic salmon. When there is an escape half the fishermen in Tasmania go down to McQuarie Harbour to catch them and they line up out at Ocean beach with surf rods. In the boat we use lures of varied kinds from shore husband fly fishes, spins and bottom fishes with grubs or worms. You are not allowed to take anything into the lakes that is not natural to the environment and two of our lakes have been contaminated by interstate fisherman bringing in carp which have bred up and ruin the lake environment by making it muddy etc. Inland fisheries are working to rid the lakes of them again.

Very nice too Zante! I don't trout fish myself, but a couple of my pals are very keen, and one of them is rather good at it! We have an old style 'barter' system going. I supply them with rabbit and pigeon meat, and they supply me with fresh trout! Wrapped in foil with garlic butter, sliced mushrooms and tomato. Baked in a hot oven and foil unwrapped for the last few minutes. Delish!! btw...nice to see you here girl!
