Okey dokey boys..I'd like to make the desktop of the ubuntu lappy a little more 'interesting'!...So can I use other icons for things like 'google' etc that I put on the desktop,or is it only the default icon that can be used. Also, is the desktop 'tweakable' regarding colours and placing a picture on it?

The 2 panels are tweakable, you can make them transparent, give background images, etc. Yes, you can change the wallpaper.

Yes, you can have whatever desktop you want !! Right click on the desktop and select Change desktop backgroundLeft click on the one you want ! To add your own...... Click on Places (top left) PicturesDrag image to the backgrounds window, and click image to set as background. If you have enough graphics power, you can enable Compiz which will let you do almost anything to tart things up You can even turn multiple desktops into a cylinder that spins to give more space when required !!

No, Ade, flash does not seem to work that way. YouTube videos just show a blank space, where the content is supposed to be.

first go to Add/remove and install Advanced desktop Effects settings (ccsm)
click System / preferences / Compizconfig settings manager
The type & power / features of your graphics chip will determine what you can do !!
There are hundreds settings to bend to your will. So the best bet is to spend some time messing about and using GOOGLE !

Desktop Cube / CylinderSystem / preferences / CompizConfig Settings Manager Make sure the following are tickedDesktop Cube Rotate Cube Cube Reflection and Deformation Reflection Click on Rotate Cube and copy these settings Exit CCSMReturn to the desktop and right click on the desktop switcher (bottom panel) *unless you've moved it ! Select PropertiesSet the number of desktops you want. That should get you started !.....If not, you will need to - System / Preferences / Appearance / Visual Effects - Click on ExtraIf this doesn't work. You don't have enough Graphics memory, or you may not have 3D acceleration enabled on your card There are many things you can do with these settings. The only limit is your Graphics card and your imagination !!

The more that I fiddle around with this Linux/Ubuntu operating system, the more I'm impressed! However, it will never seriously rival m/s, until it's made more simple for absolute puter newcomers to learn.I still reckon too many of the developers are writing programs that aren't user friendly! They should pretend that they need to sell the programs to survive, that may concentrate their minds more!!!

Very true !! Having said that, although Open source apps may lack some of the outside polish...... Bug fixing and security patching happens a lot faster......6 of one, half dozen of the other !!
