In the last two weeks I have had the most appalling internet connection from BT. I now have a pin number to take me straight to their UK based help!!!! Who knew that the guarantee for line speed is only for cable connection to the home hub and not for wifi. It doesn't matter how many times I tell them that until two weeks ago all was working well. "They" just reiterate that line speed guarantee is only for hub connection and not for wifi. How can anything just go so slow in the last two weeks? I am very unhappy with BT right now. They have offered me the new hub at a greatly reduced price so I shall see how that works and if it is just as bad as hub 3, then it will go back and I might transfer to Sky. Having said that, the same BT line will still be used. I do know were are at the farthest end of the junction box thing!!!!! (forgotten what it is called due to exasperation and old age.)

Hi Norma. Unfortunately when it comes to wi-fi most isp's aren't interested. If you have a speed problem they will almost certainly ask you to connect your router to the BT master socket and connect your pc to the router using the ethernet cable. If all looks ok they won't do much else. Wi-fi problems can be any number of things. It can depend on which channel your router is using and if your neighbours are using the same channel that can slow down things. You could download inSSIDer and see who is using what channel in your street.Usually channels 1 or 11 or good to use. Basically in a nutshell,if other users are using the same channel as you it can slow down your connection speed, especially if any of them are big downloaders and are downloading a film the same time as you want to surf the net www.metageek.net/products/inssider/

Phil, thank you I did look at that site but I use a MacBook Air so it doesn't work with that although there is an app for it, but it is USA!! I did connect my husband's laptop (my old one) by ethernet cable to the hub as the guy in BT asked me to and lo and behold the download speed was 4.9. On the Mac ii was 2.7. As there is no thingy for an ethernet cable on the Mac Air, I shall just have to put up with it I guess. Anne, I can hear you say I should have stuck with Windows, but I do love my MacBook Air, up until the last two weeks. Thank you for your quick replies. Oh, BT said they would put me on another channel so time will tell.

Have you disconnected from the hub and reconnected Norma, what speed did you get before and do you know the speed when connected with a cable. Has that dropped?

Have you disconnected from the hub and reconnected Norma, what speed did you get before and do you know the speed when connected with a cable. Has that dropped? Any disconnects or reboots and the profile can take a few days to get back up to speed again. Some info here Norma about profiles,a bit technical but worth have a read. www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/IPprofile.htm

You guys are brilliant thank you very much. MacBook Air does not have a place to connect a cable, but I am hoping that the new hub will help. I shall let you know.

Yes Nob, and BT were adamant it wasn't!!! Apparently it should cost £130 something but because I have been with them so long I got it for £35.00 Ofcourse that could be sales talk, but I don't care as once again I have excellent internet connection.

About 18 months ago I had problems with a BT hub, they offered to send me a new one, as I was getting fibre optic the next week I declined that as the hub would be replaced with that. Now we never get much less than 50meg. There is a tool in the BT software (BT desktop help) that checks the connection from your house back to the exchange, we had to use it earlier in the year when the landline got waterlogged. It diagnosed where the fault was and I was able to report it online.Suppose thats one benefit of having fibre as its a different line to the phone. If one goes down it does not take the other with it.

I don't know why BT don't use fibre all over, it would stop the pikies pinching the copper.
