stick with XP, In spite of me getting more comfortable with Win7..... I still think that XP is more user friendly!

So, to conclude. I tried Ubuntu 10.04 on the lappy, exactly the same problem as with Linux Mint. As Ubuntu works fine on my Acer netbook, I must assume that the problem does indeed lie with the network card in the Toshy. Game over!

Nope. As I mentioned earlier, it wasn't my intention to keep the lappy. I was just using it as a test bed for another Linux distro. Now I'll revert to my other plan, restore XP and give the lappy away!

What's the point of reinstalling XP Dave when whoever gets it can't get on the net to get updates? Eh! Well considering that I've had this lappy for six years happily using the net. (running XP) Why on earth would anyone else have a problem?

I thought this was the Tosh box with the knackered wnic? Is it the wireless side or the full monty ethernet port that's fewked? Dopy old git....it's the Tosh lappy that has a card that's incompatible with Linux!

So...I've made my mind up. I've decided to keep my old Toshy, and I'm going to stick Linux Mint on it. I've read some good reports about Mint, and as it's based on Ubuntu, I'm hoping that I'll get the hang of it reasonably quickly. To be honest, it doesn't really matter anyway. It's likely that another cheap lappy will be coming my way soon, and I'll soon be running out of space for them, so if things don't go well, I'll shove XP back on it then flog it for a drink! So.... as I'm a confusing "Bar Steward" ... tell old Smudger which bit of my opening post you can't understand. Then I'll get him to explain it to you!

LATEST! It's bale-out time methinks. My man at Kitz's tells me ... " The address you have posted looks like what Windows would give out. I think that Mint is using a thing called ndiswrapper which allows you to use a Windows driver for your network card(s). I don't think it is going to work without some-one with in depth knowledge nearby." So..Linux Mint has to go. I've got enough aggravation minding the Oirish prat without this bollox. I'll give Ubuntu a go on it, and if that fails, it's back to XP. Anyway, when ex wifey mk1 came round at xmas, she mentioned that her brother was going to college to learn about computing. He's 73yrs old and never used a puter, but he's a smart fella and I expect he'll pick it up ok. The ex said she might go with him 'cos she fancies a go, but to be honest, she married me so she ain't the brightest star in the sky! Anyway...I'll hang on to this lappy, and if she does go with her bro and picks it up, then I'll give her this one to play with. I'm a diamond ain't I ? Keep digging Mr Wolf.

And the moral of the story is........don't use Linux dippo. At this moment, I'm in a Spoons scoffing my sausage roll and drinking a large latte. I'm using my netbook to read your insane ramblings. This is the Acer netbook which happily glides along using Linux Ubuntu without any problems whatsoever! ;D However...if you are absolutely determined to challenge old Smudger for the position of resident dickhead, feel free to continue the contest! Actually...for the first time in years, it's rather nice to see that the old goat has a bit of competition!

Have you got the exact model number of your Toshiba ? I will do a bit of research.
My wife uses Linux Mint 9 on her Acer Laptop.
Anyone who has ever loaded "bare" Windows knows that things don't always work.

Bob Bob, it's a Toshiba Equium L20 It has an Atheros AR5005G w/less network adaptor Possibly it can be made to work by someone who's familiar with that command line thingy. Like the one they found on the Rosetta stone I shouldn't be surprised!

Don't want to go to any trouble with it 'cos I'm already running Linux Ubuntu on my netbook. Also...it wasn't w/less that was a problem, it was the network card in the lappy!
