You are probably missing the Mint driver for the nic or wnic Ratty. Yep you're possibly right Wolfey, 'cos it doesn't connect with ethernet either.

It's very unusual for Ethernet not to work "out of the box". Are both showing in network connection box under each tab ? What's showing under connection information ?

Wolfey....it's a modem/router that I use and I switched it off when I connected the ethernet cable, so obviously it rebooted when I switched back on! However.... Roseway (Eric) at Kitz's place sez it's always best to also reboot the laptop when connecting by ethernet. I'll try that later when I have time. Meanwhile....the idea me shoving Ubuntu on it and trying that is gaining popularity!

Yep...that seems to be the problem with many Linux distros. Sometimes I think that it's really just a toy for geeks.
However.... I have to admit that the Ubuntu distro that I use on my netbook is comparatively simple!

Well guys...I rolled the dice for the last time. Yup.....connected the lappy and router with ethernet cable and then rebooted them both. Still didn't connect to the internet! I went back to w/less and checked the network settings. "Active Network Connections" Interface .. 802.11 WiFi (WLan0) All of the following fields are filled in correctly. Hardware Driver Speed Security IPV4 IP Address Broadcast Address Subnet Mask So.... stumped!

You have to set them yourself, Nob, they are there, so I assume that the router has set them!!

And everything looks ok in Device Manager? I have no idea where to look for 'Device Manager' in Linux Mint!

So (ignoring that cluckwit above) ... I've checked the IPA that's been assigned and it starts with 169. Apparently this is automatically assigned when the router can't find the server. Wondering now if I should try to get a static IPA and give that a go!

LATEST! It's bale-out time methinks. My man at Kitz's tells me ... "The address you have posted looks like what Windows would give out. I think that Mint is using a thing called ndiswrapper which allows you to use a Windows driver for your network card(s). I don't think it is going to work without some-one with in depth knowledge nearby." So..Linux Mint has to go. I've got enough aggravation minding the Oirish prat without this bollox. I'll give Ubuntu a go on it, and if that fails, it's back to XP. Anyway, when ex wifey mk1 came round at xmas, she mentioned that her brother was going to college to learn about computing. He's 73yrs old and never used a puter, but he's a smart fella and I expect he'll pick it up ok. The ex said she might go with him 'cos she fancies a go, but to be honest, she married me so she ain't the brightest star in the sky! Anyway...I'll hang on to this lappy, and if she does go with her bro and picks it up, then I'll give her this one to play with. I'm a diamond ain't I ?

I'll give her this one to play with. Ratarse how long ago since she last played with it? She'll probably have forgotten all your favourites anyway. Remember you can't teach an old dog new tricks and definitely not the ones she thankfully thought had gone for ever. Still Good Luck ratarse but my money's on your EX. not ratarse's Muttley

You're beginning to remind me of that Irish fox that got caught in a trap. It chewed three of it's legs off and was still stuck in the trap!
