[Nope...nothing to do with Smudger this time!] . Anyway..my Dell lappy that I have that dual boots with XP and Ubuntu..I've just noticed something! . Using XP and in the 'System' window, prior to having Ubuntu installed, the CPU always showed as 1.8 GHz. I've just noticed that it now shows as 798MHz. Has Ubuntu nicked 1GHz for itself or summat! I can't find an explanation for this anywhere!

Have you looked in the BIOS to see what it is set at?

Have you looked in the BIOS to see what it is set at? . No I haven't bob, but I'll take a look later! Edit. I've taken a look in the BIOS now. Here's the info! . Current Clock Speed = 1.8Ghz
Minimum Clock Speed = 800Mhz
Maximum Clock Speed = 1.8Ghz
None of these fields are changeable.But....I rebooted and took another look in 'Systems' and it now shows the CPU as 1.8Ghz whereas yesterday it showed as 800Mhz. I wondered if it made a difference if it was only running on battery power, so I checked that. Exactly the same! My conclusion is that yesterday when I checked, something was running in the background and eating up the power. I'm damned if I know what it was though! . Anyway...my intention is to buy another stick of ram (512) and put it in the spare slot, thereby doubling the ram on the Dell lappy.
