There should be a menu button (bottom left) spend a while having a lookround and you'll soon get the hang of it. Also if you right click on the desktop, you'll see no-end of stuff !! Once a menu is open, you can drag/drop things (icons) to the desktop Once you've found the "synaptic package manager" you'll see how easy it is to install whatever you want ! If there's anything you need, give me a shout !

I thought synaptics was for the advanced user. Some versions of Linux don't have both the Add/Remove and Synaptic. It's only advanced in the sense that you already have just about everything you could possibly want preinstalled.....

I have to admit defeat fellas.I thought that this new o/s was supposed to be easier to use than windows.I can't get anything at all to work! I now boot my spare lappy with Linux Mint...The desktop appears with the "Linux Mint" logo. Beneath the logo is a 'Bar' with 'Gnome Desktop' and a box for typing username.Beneath this 'Bar' are three tabs...Language....Session.....Actions. 1/..Language...obviously what language I wish to use! 2/..Session.....Whatever I click on nothing happens 3/..Actions....these show options for shutting down Lappy! If I right click desktop (or left click) nothing happens There is nothing to click on at the bottom of the screen. In other words...nothing is happening, apart from me becoming very disillusioned with this whole sodding exercise! Fact is..I'm still trying to get my head around much of the windows o/s so I'm not after making life harder for myself. If it isn't easier to work than Bills system..it's no good to me!!!!

I think I see the problem ! You have installed the GNOME version instead of the XFCE ! Might be an idea to try again with XUBUNTU

Even I need an advice. I want to try KDE in ubuntu. How do I go about it? To my way of thinking, the best way is to do a clean install with the KDE distro of your choice ! The alternative is a simple command which will install KDE alongside the GNOME you already have, letting you select which one you want at startup. The problem is that it makes the setup very bloated and very much slower !!

Well guys, you know what a stubborn sod I can be, and anyway..I don't want to give that Smudger bloke ammunition to slag me off! So..I've given this Linux thingy another go! I downloaded Ubuntu 8.1 desktop this time! Burnt it to a cd-rom and have now installed it on that other lappy.Guess what!!!..sodding thing works! I've got a gazillion questions to ask..but first up,how do I set up the wireless internet connection. If someone can point me in the right direction, that'll be my first priority! One thing that did impress me,was when I plugged my usb dongle for my w/less optical mouse in...it immediately worked and informed me that the mouse battery was almost flat! Bill's machines never gave me that info! For now...my presence at the local hostelry is urgently required, so I'll return later and expect you lot to have answers for me. If not..I won't give you any more information about my shooting exploits...so there! ;D

What PDF reader do you have ? I use Foxit reader and use the "Document" tab - then "Go to Page" - then enter the page number. There's also a Page selecter at the left hand side (2nd icon down) It is more like a Powerpoint than a PDF though

Dave ;D Wireless connection Open Application>Accessories>Terminal Then type this in sudo ifconfig wlan0 up You can also copy paste that, because linux command line is way more advanced. It will then ask for your password. Type it in, you are ready to go. Had the same problem like your, worked after finding this.
