My back up computer running Linux died a while ago and I bought a caddy for it so I could view the files on the hard drive. But I cannot view any of the files on the HDD. When attached it is titled USB to ATA/ATAP | Bridge. When entered it is shown as a JMicron Generic SCSI Disk Device and USB Attached SCSI(UAS) Mass Storage Device and as working properly. As far as I can make out there is no disk drive and although I have found the way of changing a disk drive I have yet to find out how to add a disk drive to my HDD there is nothing I can find to give it a disk drive. That appears to be my problem to access any files. Any clues? Windows 10 Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.2604)

You have taken the HDD out of the failed computer and put it in a case and plugged it into another computer? Is that what your saying?

Linux can read and save Windows files, but Windoze cannot access the Linux file system? Try installing the Windows Sub System for Linux (it's called something like that) which is an option in W10.

The HDD was taken out of a computer where the laptop screen had come away from the base (when off power). I would not have expected the drive to be damaged in any way though that may be wishful thinking on my part. I have seen a couple of sites with instructions How to install Linux WSL2 on Windows 10 and Windows 11 so I will give it a whirl and let you know the progress. I have tried downloading Linux to start from a USB without success. Problem being there is lots of advice that is well out of date ie not the latest Windows updates etc.

Rattae used to use Linux Mint. I have tried it on a USB stick to breathe new life into a couple of old Lenovo lap tops and it was just too easy. The only gotcha was the WiFi card on the S10e which I sorted with a different card for a couple of quid off eBay. It was way easier than all the flaming hoops required to get Mint to recognise the original WiFi card. If only to read the fixed disk and save elsewhere, a Linux Mint live disk should be a consideration.
I hope you have better luck than I did with the Linux on W10. Too many Redmond hurdles and I fell at Beecher's!

I did try WSL2 without success. Nearly every command I put in was not recognised eg WSL ~ I loaded up Linux onto a USB and it gave me access to the files but somehow along the way I managed to lose them and the Desktop only had one file on it. Next time I access it I will note what the only file on the Desktop is in the hope someone may know what has happened.

All my folders, which were on the Desktop, have disappeared and have been replaced with one named Ubiquity.desktop without my folders or files inside. It appears to be a controller for Windows. Anyone out there know how I can retrieve my files? Or search the desktop for any files?

You could try running Recuva on the relevant fixed disk? The only problem with in my limited experience is that it just returns a massive text file and it's down to you to make sense of it.

Based on what you said Banjo I didn't download Recuva as I am sure I would not make sense of it. There did not appear to be any files on the drive that I wanted so my next project is to run Linux from the drive rather than the PC. Anybody have any links how to do it or expertise?

I decided not to run Linux but to load Windows on my old SSD and run Windows from there. Whilst I managed to do everything I was told when it came to changing the start up to the old SSD I drew a blank. These are the methods I used to get to change the BIOS. Shift+Power - restart. Screen: Continue - Use a device - Troubleshoot - Turn off your PC. Troublshoot option = Reset this PC - Advanced option. Advance option Screen = Start up repair -Start up settings - Command prompt - Uninstall updates - UEFI firmware settings - System restore. UEFI screen = Firmware setting - restart. All lead to a screen with three options, Information, Configuration and Exit. But no option to change the boot drive. See attached. Where am I going wrong?
