I was sent this in an email this morning. I don't think it'll do any good but you never know. I am disgusted with the BBC trying to do away with the 75+ free TV licences. The BBC have an arrangement with the government to put their TV licence fees up, and they collect all of the money. This government has agreed with the BBC to do away with free licences to us oldies. Also under threat are the Bus Passes, and free prescriptions’, but that’s another story. BBC Earners I wanted to ask for your help with something I hope we can really make a difference on. I've just signed this petition to save free TV for older people - would you consider doing it too? It could make the difference to whether older people are able to watch TV. It's very easy to do, all you need to do is click this link - www.ageuk.org.uk/tvpetition - and follow the steps. campaigns.ageuk.org.uk/page/34266/petition/1?ea.tracking.id=1unr39mbG.

I have signed it willingly G, but for the wrong reason- principally because I have a beef with The TVLRO. In my (perhaps unrepresentative) view, when the Government decides to shove a funding deficit onto Aunty out of the blue, we all know that the options are to charge license payers more or cut something. Because the faceless head honchos and the celebrity names will shore up their comfy chairs, we know where the scythe will fall, but frankly in my view this is the Government at fault- not the Beeb. The Government awarded the free licences originally didn't they? I could be wrong there but I suspect not. What a jolly jape? "Don't let's take away free TV for the crusties- that would be electoral suicide. Instead, make the Beeb appear responsible" for Government revenue suposedly apothecated for Public Service Broadcasting (whatever that is!)
What is genuinely worrying is it's the thin end of the wedge- bus passes and it goes without saying- prescriptions. How do they find the time to do this sort of thing when they should be focussed on getting us out of the euro net?

^^^ Unfortunately I'm not qualified to answer that Steve. Boris has launched his campaign today, clown that he is, perhaps he'll come up with a somewhat comical answer, he usually does. The best thing would be to give Joe Public the choice of which TV stations they wanted to watch. I think the BBC would lose a lot of viewers. Not possible to implement so never going to happen. I've asked myself whether I'd actually MISS the BBC I don't think I would. With so many channels to choose from now there's more than enough to watch. G.

You are correct, it was indeed the government.

Nob...the rascals use a VPN with UK servers. Errrr...so a friend in a pub told me! Ive watched the BBC news in hotels in Spain and Greece surely they must be legit or is it part of a Sky package? I can see people using a VPN, anyway £150 a year for tosh isn't value for money and they should scrap it.

Of course Nob....those Med hotels are famous for the honest way that they stream Uk channels like BBC, Sky Sports and BT Sport. Just like my local pub is.
