What about Black Sheep "Old" or "Rigweltter" from Masham? I always go for the "Old Puke" at Tan Hill Inn. It's OK, but unforgivable not to serve Paul Theakstone's creations that are brewed just a few miles to the east. They do have the Black Sheep ordinary most of the time, but Old Puke slides down OK. e&oe

Landlord's a good'un.
Never could understand % with respect to beer. You get yellow beer, brown beer and black beer.
You get all those yellow beers at 5% yet they can't do the wobble that London Pride does at 4.3% (or whatever it is thereabouts). Brown beers seem to whack sooner than yellow ones. (ignoring Belgian beers etc!) Fosters? Blearghhh, leaves a nasty taste in the mooth too. Then peeps used to go on about Courage Directors at about the same strength as Pride, casually ignoring the ESB!
One that I seriously lament the passing of is / was Brakspears SBA. The first swalley used to hit the base of yer stomach with a click! Then a load of suits sold off the brewery and had Brakspears Best brewed at some other brewery. Double capital Pffft.
I see your Landlord (and agree) and then raise you Spingo Special X from Helston in Cornwall at 6.5% (never a head ache- just p1553d & happy) There are stronger Spingos too... The Blue Anchor locals are great, they don't look over the top of their pints at you when you walk through the door and they engage you in conversation too. No food. No fruit machines. No muzak. Joy!

Apparently they are doing a Spingo Christmas / Easter Special an extra special brew with an ABV of 7.4%. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spingo_(beverage)I don't know what it tastes like but if im ever down there again Ill deffo have a couple. Mind you ive had some bad tasting ale, but the top has to be Sam Smiths, that is why I have a snakebite when in a Sam house.

30 years ago when Sid Cannon was the custodian, you could get X Special and Special X. I can't remember which way round it was, but one was 6.6% and on the beer engine, t'other was 7.0% and came from a barrel out the back. I never did try the stronger one and always regretted it. The new owners have been there some 18 years and have carried on the tradition. Best beloved told me about the Christmas ale. She necks the "Special" too! You can take fish and chips in (or whatever you like) and eat it with your pint. There's a skittle alley out the back and you can climb the wooden steps up into the brewery and take a look as long as you ask first (you can't just wander around a brewery!) Deffo give "The Blue" a try before you give up the struggle...I walk in with a knowing smile (grin actually!) of anticipation and out (reluctantly) with a warm glow. Disclaimer: it may sound like it but I have no connection with this boozer.

My favourite pub tipple is Dogs bollocks. Used to be a good laugh walking into a boozer packed with emmets and loudly asking for a pint of it. The strongest that I have ever brewed was one called "Thomas Hardy ale" 12.5%. Twas that strong that tother half suggested that I water it down cos when it was given to visitors it wasnt long before they fell asleep after drinking it.

Dinks, do you remember "Dog Bolter" that used to be available in David Bruce's "Firkin" outlets? There's a "tail' to tell with that one following a "victorian evening" one Christmas in Richmond (Surrey) many years ago now, but I've gone on enough already. Dog Bolter was a good'un.

I have a book of old recipies that I brew from time to time, Most of them are not brewed now, probably because they are so strong.

I remember red barrel, it came out of red barrel pumps. I didn't mind it, it certainly wasn't the worst I've taster, bit gassy but that's all. The last time was in the Silver link in Donny many years ago.

That's very decent of you since I hijacked your thread mojo. Mea culpa!
Any drinkers still have a Red Barrel key ring? I still have an Esso man key ring (Not original mind, an 80s reissue) and he must have done over a quarter of a million miles with me in various vehicles, the Saab 900 being the latest (although I've had that for 24 years now)

I'm afraid that you've got the wrong man in me BJ. My taste's in beer are very conservative, I find summat that I like and stick to it. Nope, I don't try every new guest ale that they bring in, if they have JS smooth on then that's what I'll sup thank you very much! If not, I might smash a couple of pints of the draught guiness down my neck, even a pint or two of the local Tiger bitter if in an Everards pub. (it's an acquired taste) I do remember that Red Barrel, looked like piss and tasted much the same I'm afraid!
