As a photographer I watch sunrise / sunset and moonrise / moonset times quite closely. Also using TPE (The Photographers Ephemeris) I also watch where the sun and moon will rise and set. Today is interesting in that it has the earliest sunset time of the year, at 1526, here in the north east. Although the shortest day is not until 20th / 21st, by then sunset has already eased out a little. It always amazes me that, even in our relatively small group of islands, sunset times vary so much. Here 1526 Doncaster 1545 Leicester 1550 Truro 1617 Well I find it interesting anyway

I find it interesting too Al. It makes me aware of the vast scale of things. I have one of these doo-hickeys: www.flight-logistics.com/Photorapher_Compass_page.htmlIt appears that they find spelling quite challenging! A rudimentary search reveals that you can get one much cheaper here: www.wexphotographic.com/buy-photographers-sun-position-compass/p1013005At least I think it's the same thing because I've had mine at least 20 years and the manufacturer's spiel reveals that they "invented" it about 8 years ago. If it's the same as mine then it's quite unexpectedly thick. I'm sure that it's the same company- a very distinctive name. I hope I'm not giving away the game on a weapon in your arsenal? Of course thinking about it, you probably already have one... e&oe

Thanks for the links banjo. I mentioned that I use TPE (the Photographer's Ephemeris). Have a look here - TPE it's brilliant. You'll need to put your own co-ordinates in of course.

T'was my old Dad's birthday, the 21st of December. He was always fond of telling people that it was not the shortest day but the longest night with two equally short days- one each side. Also, he maintained that he was Sagittarius but it's on the cusp with Capricorn (could care less about that snake-oil / feldegarb rubbish, but as usual- YMMV!) Steve.
