R.I.P Richard aged 90 yes I agree one of our greats. Sorry drinkers but having an obituary column, or nearly having one, just shows the average age of our drinkers. Yes famous peeps die but do we need insignificant repetitive threads here? Do we really need to be told again that a 90 year old, almost unknown, actor has died. Name another film he starred in other than The Great Escape without using Google.

You might like this personal recollection of Richard Attenborough as he was when I met him!
It was either 1969 or 1970, that I worked in a home for seriously crippled children (as it was know in those days). One teatime, the matron told me that we would be having a special guest the following day and to alert all staff. Under no circumstances were we to inform anyone. least of all the press. I was told who it was. He was coming in his capacity of Chairman (I think, if not Patron) of the Shaftesbury Society, the organisation behind the home.
Duly he came. I was introduced. I took it upon myself to ask him if I could follow him round the home and photograph him with each child he met, and give the photo to the child's parents later. He agreed. We didn't speak again. I kept low profile and we nodded to each other when he left and I mouthed "thank you".
Each of the photo's were given to the parents and I have none.
A few hours of contact with this man that I have always remembered.

I know that those children would have died by now, as the majority had muscular dystrophy, but if the parents are still around, maybe they will be prompted to seek the photo's out.

He was in Gandi the Film, if you've come off the ovaltine yet nob I knew JJ meant Gandi, the film, what the hell else could it mean? By the way I was on rationed Ovaltine last night owing to a severe miscalculation and the lateness of the hour.

Brighton Rock, 10 Rillington Place, In Which We Serve, Guns at Batasi, Jurassic Park . View Attachment'Guns at Batasi'...that was the film where he played an army officer, and that was the film where I first realised what a fine actor he was. I also enjoyed his acting in 'The Sand Pebbles' ... with the late great Steve Mcqueen. Raised and educated here in Leicester, where he and his bro went to the local grammar school, a building at Leicester Uni is named after him. A mega talented family the Attenboroughs. RIP Dickie BTW....Smudger is a prat.
