Yep, the advice is required for my pal Spanner. Firstly, Spanner is a Serb by birth, Serbs hate everyone, but they especially hate Mussies. Serbs have spent centuries cutting the throats of Muzzies, it's how them boys roll innit! So, Spanner has BT broadband and Sky tv in his house, and he was led to understand that anyone with BT bb could also get BT Sports at no extra cost. So he gets BT on the dog. His call was answered by what was obviously an Asian fella, that's when it all started to go pear shaped. To Spanner, all Asians are by default, or at least until they prove otherwise ....Muzzies. Spanner reckons that this Asian ( of unknown faith) told him that he'd have to get some sort of box, and he'd have to pay for it! Predictably, Spanner went off like an Afghan IED. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Spanner doesn't get a visit from the PC police. So, can one of you that already has a similar set-up to Spanner, give me a heads up on what he needs, and what it costs to get my pal on this BT Sports channel?

Dave I have BT Broadband & Sky, last month i set BT sports up tell your mate Spanner to do it online it's a piece of piss and less chance of him getting arrested for making racist remarks . The only tackle i have is Sky box and BT home hub (router) no other gear is needed, yes it is free but he may have to start a new contract with BT. sport.bt.com/pages/sport/BT-Sport-on-Sky/

OK, I know I am quibbling here, but BT Sports Channel on Sky TV isn't as FREE as I thought... You have to have BT Broadband..
If you don't have BT Broadband, ie, you only use Sky TV, you have to change to BT Broadband to get the 'Free' BT Sports Channel.
If you do have BT Broadband, you have to take out a new one year contract to get the 'Free' Sports Channel.
Where, exactly, does the 'Free' bit fit in? It isn't soddin' 'Free'....

Ah! thanks fellas. I have just spoken to my dopey brain dead Serb pal, and it seems that he is even dopier than I thought. Y'see when I first asked him if he had Sky, he told me yes. Now he tells me that he only has the satellite dish and doesn't actually have a contract with Sky. Then he sez..." but I can get a hooky Sky box no trouble".....like a fat lot of good that's gonna be without a Sky viewing card number. So, it appears that Spanner's meltdown with the Asian guy (of unknown faith) was down to Spanner being such a dopey git. He's still barred from our local pub 'cos of his hair trigger temper. He's a bad lad and I shall chastise him when I see him tomorrow. Thanks again Fletch/Hanf

We are looking at this from a slightly different perspecive, Geoff.
If you already have BT Broadband, you have to take out a further 12 months contract, ie you are tied into BT for another year.
I always think of something free as having no obligations. BT are effectively saying, 'You can have BT Sports for nothing, but it will cost you a one year contract.'
Maybe it's me being a grumpy old bugger...

Hang on, as I've said, my pal already has BT b/b but if he wants BT sports, he has to pay for Sky tv...so it isn't free to him is it?

If you have BT Broadband... and if you watch FreeView on an old Sky receiver, can you watch BT Sports for nothing???
Maybe, going back to the original post, that's what BT was suggesting - you need a FreeView-type box, but you have to buy it.
Remember, everything is free, just as long as you're prepared to pay for it.

I have BT Broadband and I do not have Sky TV. I signed up online for BT Sports (which is a free add-on to my BT BB Package). I now watch BT Sport on my desktop PC. I did not have to extend my BT Contract, or agree to a new one, although I would have been happy to do so. BT Sports is FREE for BT Broadband customers.

I have BT bb and sky, I sorted BT sports online at no cost. What they might have been trying to con him into is a box for BTs own net version of freeview, they have tried to sell me it on several occasions, only to be told that I did not want or need it. They sill try though, in the end I threatened to move my custom. I think its called BT vision or summat like that. If he uses BTbb and sky it is totally free.

Already have BT broadband? Just add BT Sport to the Sky Digital Satellite Platform for FREE on one Sky box. This will start a new 12-month contract of your current BT Broadband package. If you've got a broadband special offer, you'll keep it on the same terms you originally agreed to - including when it ends. The basic price of BT broadband stays the same: and that's what you'll pay when any special offer stops. What you need to order: • Your BT account number - find this on your latest bill or by logging into My BT • Your Sky viewing card number – you'll find this by selecting 'TV Guide' on your remote, then 'settings'. Please don't remove the card while ordering as this will stop us from being able to activate your card. • If you have more than one Sky box at home, when you order make sure you give us the viewing card number of the box you’ll want to watch BT Sport on (each Sky box has a different viewing card number).
This is the blurb you get from the BT contact quoted above. Please note the 3rd line down... ... The next sentence about special offers - I don't really understand that bit, so perhaps you don't have to start a new 12-month contract???

I've just ordered up BT Sports on my BT Broadband and Sky tuner.
This little sentence appears right near the end of the on-line ordering process:
Change to your services Your BT Broadband package will be re-contracted for a minimum term of 12 months.
Please note, there is an option of three pounds per month additional if you require HD.
What the hell......

I have BB Infinity and have free BT sports on the computer. FREE BT sports on Sky. (you just give them your viewing card number). I have a older BT Vision box that is too old to receive it, and they wanted me to pay about 50 quid for a new box. I told them to forget it.

Well, after sifting through all of your very diverse and interesting posts, I'm now even more confused than I was before, and amazingly, I'm not even the one who needs the sodding advice! So in a nutshell, my pal Spanner, who is totally computer illiterate, who has BT b/b for a scruffy old windows XP lappy that has the lid hanging on by only a prayer and one hinge, and who only uses this knackered old thing for his on-line betting, would rather like to watch the BT Sports channel on his tv, and without paying one extra poxy penny for any sort of box, crate or any other sort of unwanted container!................. What do I tell him? They're coming to take me away...ha ha!

It is free. although they will probably try to sell BTvision at the same time. Thats how I did it, took a couple of days for the viewing card to update.
